River Lampreys (Lampetra fluviatilis) at Annacotty Weir on the River Mulkear, Co. Limerick, this week. This barrier blocks lamprey migration in the lower reaches of this tributary of the River Shannon. These lampreys are on their upstream spawning migration but cannot get past this barrier. They repeatedly attempt to find a way over the obstacle on suitable nights, but there is no way upstream for them. This struggle continues for months, and eventually, the survivors spawn below the weir the following spring. However, this situation makes the population highly vulnerable, as they are confined to the lower 2 km of the river. The River Mulkear is designated as a Special Area of Conservation (SAC) for this species. It joins the River Shannon downstream of the hydroelectric scheme, which also blocks lamprey migration.
