This speech *is* one for the history books. But that’s less a compliment, than a coda. Carney has given us the words to mark the end of the ‘rules-based order’…by acknowledging it never really existed. It was a collective illusion. That now is over.

Reminds me of what Kissinger said of Trump back in 2018:  “I think Trump may be one of those figures in history who appears from time to time to mark the end of an era and to force it to give up its old pretences. It doesn’t necessarily mean that he knows this, or that he is considering any great alternative. It could just be an accident.” Many elites lived in an imaginary world full of pretences.

It was quite the speech; I suspect a lot of world leaders will want to meet with him. It also was very helpful for putting Canada's deal with China (and other countries) into perspective. By the way, the entire speech and interview is 30 minutes long.

True but he also holds open the possibility that we could make a new rules based order that is stronger and fairer than the old, flawed one that now no longer exists. That’s something well worth us all striving for.

You did not understand the speech. Listen again. The rules-based order was very real, but it was based on collective acceptance/legitimation by its participants. So it is with all efficacious political orders. This was Havel's point. This was Carney's point.

Very good speech. But as Carney says this is not new and western powers to their shame were happy to participate & profit as long as it only impacted the developing, mainly brown-skinned world. Now Trump is doing the same to them and they are scared, as they've seen the impacts.
