Mark Carney admitted the rules based international order is a fiction. A fiction that has melted away. Why then are we handing over Chagos, clinging to an advisory ruling of an old order that no longer exists?

Former EU foreign policy advisor Nathalie Tocci spoke to CBS News’ Haley Ott about how the U.S. and Israel strikes on Iran have disrupted the international order and how the “fiction” of the rules-based order may be over. “The fiction is over. So in a sense this war is yet another piece of that fiction coming down.”

This speech *is* one for the history books. But that’s less a compliment, than a coda. Carney has given us the words to mark the end of the ‘rules-based order’…by acknowledging it never really existed. It was a collective illusion. That now is over.

Mark Carney flew to Ireland and warned the rules-based order is "breaking down." Days later at the G7, Trump proved him right — cracking Iran after 47 years and handing Syria the Hezbollah job, over Israel. Carney calls it a rupture. We call it the future. 👇

WOW … Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez pulls a Kamala in Munich … how embarrassing for America when this is the best the Democrat Party has to offer.😳😲 Could someone please decipher what she said, because it’s all word-salad to me. “We are in a new day and a new time. But that does not mean that a majority of Americans are willing to walk away from a rules based order and that we’re ready to walk away from our commitment to democracy.” “I think what we identify in a rules based order, hypocrisy is vulnerability and so I think what we are seeking is a return to a rules based order that eliminates the hypocrisies around when too often in the West we look the other way for inconvenient populations to act out, to act out the paradoxes.” The only thing I took from this is a new phrase the leftist want to put into our vocabulary … and that is the phrase … ‘Rules Based Order’

PM Mark Carney said the "international order is crumbling" and suggested Canada's close ties with the U.S. are no longer reliable. He added that Canada has "overcome the betrayal" of the trade war and should build relationships elsewhere.

BANNON: Carney said yesterday to "stop the fiction." The only "fiction" here is that you guys are picking up your share. You're not an ally; you're a protectorate. Guess what? America comes first. American security comes first. American citizens come first. Step one is focusing on hemispheric defense. That's why Greenland is such a central issue! We have no confidence the Europeans can defend that corridor!

Prof. Nathalie Tocci (Nathalie Tocci) | European Foreign Policy Expert | Johns Hopkins SAIS, Europe: The middle powers debate post-Trump is far more normative than before. Canadian PM Mark Carney framed it well, despite him not naming them specifically - there are wannabe empires out there: Russia, America, possibly China. And then there are middle & small powers that have an interest in rules, laws & norms. The rules-based order may have become a fiction that needs rethinking - but rethinking doesn't mean abandoning rules altogether. It means reinterpreting, revising & building on them. Middle powers have no interest in the law of the jungle & the survival of the fittest. And that is a very different conversation.

This might be the first time a major Western leader has admitted this openly that the international rules based order, while useful for some things, is, stripped down to its core, a lie and that nations have simply been keeping up appearances. Something major has to change.

Mark Carney’s 2026 Davos speech is the “White Flag” of the Western liberal order. By “taking the sign out of the window,” Carney has confirmed what Arnaud Bertrand brilliantly noted: The West has irremediably lost the Second Cold War. Why? Because a Cold War requires two competing systems, and Carney just admitted the Western one no longer exists. To understand this collapse, we must look at the evolution of Cold War metaphors: 🔹 1946 (Kennan): The USSR as an “insane patient” needing containment. 🔹 2020 (Eric Li): The US as the “Late-Soviet” power, decaying from within while China builds domestic resilience. （see the video below） 🔹 2026 (Carney): The “Shopkeeper” (Havel) who finally stops performing the “pleasant fiction” of a rules-based order. This is the strategic victory of Eric Li’s “Short Telegram.” In 2020, Li argued China should not “single-handedly challenge” the liberal camp but let it crumble under its own internal contradictions. He predicted that Western “political decay” would eventually force an admission of reality. Carney’s speech proves China is winning by not playing the West’s game. While the West is fragmenting into a “world of fortresses,” China is executing Li’s strategy: focusing on “spiritual civilization,” domestic strength, and “variable geometry” coalitions like the Belt and Road. As Carney dumps “nostalgia” for a world of “value-based realism,” he is essentially acknowledging that sovereignty is now anchored in the “ability to withstand pressure”—a core tenet of China’s long-term resilience strategy. When a system’s chief architects admit it was an “asymmetrical fiction,” the “collective belief” that sustains power shatters. This shift from private doubt to common knowledge is the ultimate systemic cascade. Is this the birth of a true multipolar world, or just a “poorer, more fragile” era of fragmenting hegemons? If the “Rules-Based Order” is officially dead, what fills the vacuum? Let’s discuss. 👇 #Davos2026 #MarkCarney #EricLi #Geopolitics #NewColdWar #China #GlobalOrder
