"If you have ambitions to be a Professor at Yale, Harvard, or one of these big institutions, the way you do that is mostly by getting funding for research. It's by getting a lot of publishing - a lot flying around the world to talk about something. You need all of these things to bolster your reputation as an international expert in this area. Now, the best way to do that, at least in psychiatry but I suspect in other areas of medicine, is actually to collaborate with pharmaceutical companies to run clinical trials. They write the publications for you - most of it, they do a lot of the grunt work, they give you the protocols, and then, essentially, they fund you and fly you around the place. I used to remember, as a junior doctor, looking up to the Professors. And they would say, 'These drugs are safe and effective. There's not a lot of problems there.' ...What I've seen more and more is that they've been compromised, and that they have incentives tied to the money and to career advancement. That means that they can't be as forthright as they ought to be about these things. And it's gotten to a problem where these are the Professors who are training the doctors who are setting the tone for what is acceptable care out there. And I think that has totally flipped. Honestly, I think that was wrong... If you're asking the question of like, how do we evaluate people on exactly the thing that AI can already do, that seems kind of the wrong. Our interview process has always been... you can use as much AI as you want to use. We're going to give you a few hours. Just build your whole own product surface. Dwarkesh asks the world's most famous mathematician: what's your advice for someone considering a career in math, especially in light of AI progress? Tao is honest about uncertainty: "We live in a time of change. A particularly unpredictable era. Things that we've taken for granted for centuries may not hold anymore. The way we do everything... not just mathematics... will change." He admits his preference: "In many ways, I would prefer a much more boring, quiet era where things are much the same as they were 10 or 20 years ago. But one just has to embrace this. There's going to be a lot of change. The things you study... some of them may become obsolete or revolutionized. But some things will be retained." On new opportunities: "Previously, you had to go through years and years of education and get a math PhD before you could contribute to the frontier of math research. But now it's quite possible at the high school level that you could get involved in a math project and actually make a real contribution... because of all these AI tools and Lean and everything else." His advice: "There will be a lot of non-traditional opportunities to learn. You need a very adaptable mindset. There'll be worth pursuing things just for curiosity and for playing around. Mark Cuban: "If I was starting today, I would spend every waking minute learning about AI." At SXSW 2025, he meant every word of it: "Even if I'm sleeping, I'm listening to podcasts talking about AI, trying everything. My whole Instagram and TikTok things are now AI hacks, guys. There's that much changing that rapidly." To understand why he feels this strongly, he traces the evolution of what it actually costs to build something from scratch: "It went from back in the way way way back in the day $5,000 for a PC that was that big, right? To hey, if you just have a laptop and connection to the internet, you can start anything." And now we've crossed into something entirely different. AI hasn't just lowered the cost of starting. It's handed every first-time entrepreneur something that used to be reserved for the privileged few: access to expertise. "You have a mentor whether you use Perplexity, Anthropic, Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini, it doesn't matter. You have experts." Some will point out that these tools hallucinate and get things wrong. Cuban doesn't buy it as an excuse: "Let me just tell you, your mentors and experts don't always get it right either." And beyond mentorship, the tools themselves have eliminated entire layers of grunt work that used to slow early-stage founders down: "You've got these tools that will just spider everything, that'll do your emails, that'll do sales calls for you. My upcoming release of "Cinematic AI" has made me think about how bodies of work are formed. I think some are manifested and some are revealed. I think "Cinematic AI" falls into the latter category. It was not something I had a clear vision for and then created, but it was something that was revealed to me over time. I thought I saw a glimmer of it early on, but only after some time had past, could I see the body of work emerge. With a bit more context and watching great artists and how they work and think, it finally came to me that this series of 15-20 pieces that I had created could be a worthy collection to mint. AI art has been going through so many transformations from the early GAN work to Collaborative AI to now AI being widely accessible through platforms like MidJourney, Stable Diffusion, and many others. But one area that I have seen explode in recent months is cinematic AI. I distinguish this from animated AI, which has been around for a while, but cinematic AI is where the movements created by AI are getting closer to what you'd see in a movie or captured on a video camera. It still has a long way to go but it is getting more real than surreal as the technology develops. And this is where I seem to have found my groove, my home, my little corner in the artistic landscape. After Runway launched their image-to-video tool, it just blew my mind and I went down a deep rabbit hole and have created a new cinematic AI piece almost every other day for the past few months. I initially saw many of these pieces as just experiments, but with some time to reflect, I am seeing them as having the potential of being relevant pieces of artwork to mark this time in the development of AI. In some cases, I'm not sure if I'll ever be able to create a similar piece again, since the tools I use are not in my control, but in the control of the AI platforms, who are constantly improving and evolving the tools. Given all of this, there is no better way to mark my place in time than on the blockchain. I truly believe that this body of work has the potential to be an important artifact of this era in AI and AI art. It is always hard to judge ones own work, but what I can do is permanently etch in time on an immutable public database saying that I created this. Only time will tell if the work has any value or is of any significance, but who created it and what was created cannot be disputed. I hope this gives you and especially collectors some perspective on the work I'll be releasing next week. I'm still very early in my artistic journey, but hopefully some of you will see promise in what I'm doing and maybe even put in a early bet on my art practice by bidding on a piece next week. Yann LeCun -- Meta's chief AI scientist and a Turing Award winner -- explains why scaling up LLMs will never reach human-level AI, and names the four things today's systems still can't do: "If you think that we're going to get to human-level AI by just training on more data and scaling up LLMs, you're making a mistake." "If you're an investor and you invest in a company that told you we're going to get to human-level AI and PhD level by just training on more data and with a few tricks... that was probably not a good idea." "There are ideas about how to go forward and have systems that are capable of doing what every intelligent animal and human are capable of doing, and that current AI systems are not capable of doing." "Understanding the physical world, having persistent memory, and being able to reason and plan. Those are the four characteristics that need to be there." "That requires systems that can acquire common sense, that can learn from natural sensors like video, as opposed to just text." The entire market is priced on a straight line from bigger models to AGI. One of the people who invented deep learning is telling you the line doesn't reach -- and that the real bottleneck isn't compute, it's world models. If he's right, the winner isn't whoever stacks the most GPUs. It's whoever teaches a machine to learn from video the way a child does.

The danger of AI is not just the slop, but what we lose in the process. Michael Pollan explains: "We're moving into this time where we're gonna sub out writing to AI. And AI can write our papers, and professors are dealing with this everywhere now. But what is lost is a way of thinking. Writing does something to your brain. It gives you access to things you can't know just walking around or thinking or planning or outlining. If you were just transcribing what was in your head, it would be kind of onerous. I built this zoom UI entirely in Cursor I still mainly use Claude for everything. Sometimes, I switch to o1, but Agent has been game-changing for me, mainly because it's able to figure out a lot of things by itself, like which files to include, what errors to fix and it scales well with the complexity of bigger projects. So 6 months solo into this project (with breaks and while creating courses), I must say that building a video editor from scratch is humbling. The hardest parts are really hard (like exporting, multi-video editing, storage) and the shiny things are mostly easy. AI does a lot of things well, but you absolutely need to be persistent, approach from multiple angles and combine with your intuition and taste. Still, without AI, this project would have been just a dream. And no matter what you want to design or code, or what tools you use, it'll only be meaningful if you put a lot of thought and execution into it.

I think that's actually the wrong conceptual model. The correct conceptual model is that AI is coming to our society, and it's really important that AI ends up lifting everyone up. And the way it's going to do that is through Western civilization's ways that work. We have this civilization that's built based on the enlightenment, property rights, Judeo-Christian values and classical virtues. It's a functional civilization. We don't want to give that all up for AI. We want to make healthcare and education work better, but we have to do it through the way it works. I think making government work better is really, really hard. It takes a lot of persistence. It takes a lot of time. On the margin, his time might be better spent building these amazing AI companies, and I think that's completely legit. I don't think we should discount the importance of fixing government, especially because of AI, because if we want to have everyone do better in health care and education and government itself, these things need to be functional. They need to work with it. They need to block crony capitalism. That means functional government. You need both."
