Memories of Greg Biffle will be especially pronounced this weekend. The summertime Daytona race was his first Cup win and one of the biggest of his whole career. In a rare superspeedway fuel mileage race, Biffle was good to go for the final 40+ laps and led the last 21. Once Bobby Labonte ran out of gas behind him, The Biff was home free to the checkered flag and to becoming a first-time winner at Daytona of all places.

Longtime independent NASCAR driver Phil Barkdoll died Tuesday at his home in Vinton, Iowa. He was 87. Barkdoll made 23 Cup starts as a superspeedway specialist and is best remembered as a fixture in Daytona 500 qualifying throughout the 80s and 90s. He made The Great American Race five years in a row from 1988 to 1992, with a best finish of 15th in 1989. Barkdoll qualified for the Daytona 500 for the final time in 1997, making a comeback after a battle with cancer to earn a spot in the starting field, but sold his ride to Joe Nemechek after his team failed to qualify themselves. Barkdoll ran time trials for the 1998 Daytona 500 then turned the car over to Mike Wallace, who made the field in Barkdoll's car and finished 23rd. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be directed to the Stead Family Children’s Hospital at the University of Iowa.

Daytona 500 winning crew chief Billy Scott when asked if there's a way to fix mass fuel saving on superspeedways: "I doubt there's a fix to it, because we're just gonna figure out the next way to exploit it. ... It'd be like asking you to change how chess is played." Denny Hamlin adds that there IS a way to fix it, but it involves NASCAR increasing speeds to make handling matter more and spread the field out. "As long as (NASCAR's) insurance company's okay with it, you're gonna have to speed up the cars." Suggested letting teams come up with a superspeedway package and trying it out at the Clash next year. (h/t Alan Cavanna )
