Naval Ravikant’s checklist for starting a company “The most important thing is there are no formulas. At the end of the day, you have to do what you love, and you have to do it even though people tell you it’ll never work. But that being said, if there was a formula [for starting a company], I would put it something like this.” Naval started seven companies before AngelList and this is the checklist he recommends running through before starting a startup: 1. Pick a great cofounder. This is most important: “You can do a company on your own, but it’s like you can raise a child on your own, but you probably shouldn’t. You need someone who’s going to be there with you.” This has it’s own checklist. Your cofounder should be: a. Very high intelligence (”hopefully they make you feel dumb, or they’re not smart enough”) b. Very high energy (”They should be extremely hardworking. A founder is someone who never has to be motivated. You should not have to be telling them to do their job.”) c. Very high integrity. (”a smart, hardworking crook who’s going to cheat you is the worst kind of person to be paired up with.”) 2. Pick a very large market. “Notice I don’t talk about the idea. I think ideas are almost irrelevant… The more important thing is that you pick a large space that you’re knowledgeable and passionate about. And then you will figure out what the right thing to do within that space is.” You want to be able to say to investors: “This is a space where there’s a huge market. I’m really knowledgeable and passionate about it. Here’s the great person that I have doing it with me. And here’s the minimum viable product that we have built. That will show that we can test in the marketplace… You iterate until you get to product/market fit… And then you go and you raise money from people you trust. And you use that money to scale.”

Telegram founder Pavel Durov on what separates A Players from B Players “I can recall a few instances in my career where firing an engineer actually resulted in an increase in productivity,” Telegram founder Pavel Durov begins. He gives an example of two Android engineers building an app that are having a hard time hitting deadlines: “You think, ‘I probably have to hire a third engineer.’ But then you notice that one of [the engineers] is really weird — falling behind schedule, complaining, not assuming responsibility — and you ask, ‘What if I just fired this person?’ Then you fire this person, and in a few weeks you realize you never needed a third engineer. The problem was this guy who created more issues and problems than he solved. It’s so counterintuitive because in developing tech projects, you tend to think that you just throw more people into something and things get solved miraculously.” Pavel continues: “The other thing that people don’t realize is how demotivating working with a B Player is. Everyone can tell if the other engineer they’re working with is really competent. If the person is asking the wrong questions and they keep lagging behind, at a certain point if you’re an A Player, you get get this dissatisfaction and feeling that you are not able to realize your full potential and accomplish what you’re really meant to accomplish because of this person working next to you (or pretending to work next to you).” Pavel reflects on what it is exactly that separates these B Players from A Players: “In some cases it’s not because the person is lazy . . . Good morning, towel friends. I annotated my interview with Will The Glarer and I thought this section was interesting. "You couldn’t honeypot me if you fucking wanted to. I’ll get more intel out of your agent than you’re going to get out of me." **Grant:** It’s because he doesn’t think straight when he has a woman in front of him, for some reason. **Will:** Grant, you’re projecting, my friend. Grant (Analysis): I mean, that’s what I was going to say to Will. He doesn’t understand this, and I don’t know... I don’t feel a need to defend myself, but you’re out of your mind if you think I didn’t date people in college. I mean, I lost 130 pounds from September 2007 to May 2008—specifically because I was at Boston College and I wanted to date people. I’ve had plenty of relationships. I’m just very disciplined—not because I necessarily wanted to be, but because I heard the call to be a priest in 2013, in the spring, right before I became disabled. I was praying to the Virgin Mary—the Virgin Mother, who’s the patroness of the Jesuit order—outside of Bapst Library. I think it was Bapst. I was praying outside. They have these little shrines to the Virgin Mother all around Boston College. I hope they’re still there; I really liked them. But anyway, I was praying to the Virgin Mother, and I’ll never forget that when you hear the call, it is not a joke. You may not choose to pursue discernment, but you are not getting away from that. It’s not your choice. If you hear the call, you’ve been called to serve. That’s it. It’s not a pact. You’ve literally been called to serve. Your life’s never going to be the same again. I was praying, and I heard the call. It was very clear. The call is different for everyone, but for me, it was like: “The world is yours to behold if you can abscond from your temporal inclinations.” Okay, I know what that means. It was not a choice. My entire life changed from that moment. From that moment on, I never thought about video games or Fridays or the weekend—or women—ever the same way again. I would like to have a partner, to love someone and take on the world together, but I never thought about the world the same way again. So a lot of people don’t understand me. People chase me all the time. I’m not interested in that. I turn people down all the time. I’m not being rude; I just don’t want that. I live to serve. Okay, imagine what it would come down to if I tried to be in the life of every person who wanted me to be intimate with them. I cannot do that. I’m meant to help people. If I was just in one person’s life, I’d have commitments to them and their family—and to my family—that would inhibit me from serving, and I can’t do that. I’m married to the cause: my cause, my principles, and the work that I do. And so it’s not... It’s just that people misunderstand—and will misunderstand—how disciplined I am.
