A life-or-death situation, twofold: a mother elephant and her tiny calf had fallen into a well and were hopelessly stuck within its watery depths. The mum was submerged, using her trunk as a snorkel, whilst her baby struggled to keep her head above water. When our teams arrived, the exhausted calf couldn't tread water much longer. Immediate action was needed. We guided ropes around the calf and dragged her to solid ground, carrying her to shade, away from her mother's distressed calls. Meanwhile, our bowser and supplemental water pump began the slow work of filling the deep well, raising the water level so the mother could float to freedom. Hours later, when the water reached the lip, we threw ropes around the mum and used the bowser and Land Cruiser to pull in tandem and haul her out. The moment she stood on all four feet, we released her calf. They ran straight to each other, reuniting with palpable relief. We flew home to the most wonderful sight below: baby happily suckling from her mum, finally free and together. This ⬆️ epic emergency unfolded back in 2024; many more emergencies have unfolded since then. In the past week, we've rescued a calf from a well, and attended 14 veterinary treatments. A brave man jumped into the water and swam toward the struggling calf. He carefully lifted the little one and brought it safely back to shore. Desperate mother wouldn’t stop until someone saved her baby calf 🐄❤️ A desperate mother cow whose calf was stuck in a pond and couldn’t get out. The mother cow kept approaching a car, mooing, looking at the man as if she were “begging” for help for her baby. Although he was very afraid of the large cow, the man bravely came closer and helped rescue the calf. The mother cow stood nearby watching, not attacking, but seemingly asking him to save her baby. During a safari trip, a baby elephant (only a few months old) was extremely curious and stubborn, repeatedly using its trunk to touch, explore, and even trying to climb into a tourist bus 💖 The mother elephant became very worried. She used her trunk to pull her baby back several times, gently pushed it away, and tried to guide it somewhere else. But the little elephant refused to listen, clinging to the vehicle like it was a “brand-new toy.” Eventually, the mother elephant had to use the trick of “pretending to walk away” so that the baby would follow her back. Before the whole herd left, she even waved her trunk as if saying, “Sorry, my baby is being a little too mischievous.” 🐘💗

ALERT: Police smash the window of a Ford Bronco as a mother cries for help to save her baby trapped inside during a heat wave in Michigan. A mother called the Dearborn Police Department after accidentally locking her keys in her car at the gas station while her baby was still inside. Officers arrived at the scene, and with the car off and the heat index potentially reaching up to 110°, officers decided not to wait for rescue crews and immediately busted one of the windows. The baby was safely rescued from inside the vehicle, and Dearborn Police Chief Issa Shahin warns of the dangers of these situations, saying, “When in doubt, take them out.”

Imagine losing your mom on your very first day in the world. That’s exactly what happened to this baby elephant. Poachers killed its mother, leaving the tiny calf completely alone. It was so hungry, so dehydrated, and so weak… it couldn’t even stand. A rescuer named Adam found the little elephant just in time. To protect it from the burning sun and biting insects, he covered its body with cool mud before taking it to safety. The first few days were heartbreaking. Willow, as Adam later named the baby elephant, would often look around as if she was still searching for her mother. But Adam never gave up on her. He fed her, cared for her, and stayed by her side every single day. Slowly, Willow started trusting him. Before long, she became playful, curious, and full of personality. She loved interacting with people and always found funny ways to make visitors smile. Then something amazing happened. Adam noticed Willow loved holding a paintbrush. So he gave her canvases and paints, rewarding her favorite treats whenever she finished a picture. With practice, Willow got better and better. Soon, she was even signing her own paintings. Our hearts are melting with joy to see the Elephant mother raising her trunk to thank our foresters after they rescued and united a very young baby elephant with the mother. The baby had slipped and fallen into a canal in Pollachi in Coimbatore District in Tamil Nadu. The Mother tried hard to rescue the baby but the young one was unable to come out due to strong water flow. One of the loveliest things about what we do? Watching wild-born babies grow up. This is Ola. She's a miracle baby but it's actually her mother, Olare's, story that makes this scene even more special. Back in 2009, an elephant calf was found clinging to her dying mother in the Mara. With Vets left with no choice but to end the mother's suffering, we brought the orphaned calf to the Nursery. That baby was named Olare, and we raised her as our own. Today, Olare is all grown up, living wild with a daughter of her own: little Ola – two years old, round-cheeked and bright-eyed. Discover their story:

The hardest rescue mission our teams have been called to? This operation to haul a bull elephant out of a sinkhole is up there. It unfolded last month when the Kenya Wildlife Service received reports of a trapped bull in Chakama. One of our pilots flew to the scene, where he met the Kulalu Anti-Poaching Team and KWS. It was a complicated situation: the bull was stuck shoulder-deep and, while he couldn't escape, he could move around inside, which made it challenging for teams to position the straps needed to free him. After consulting Dr Limo of the SWT/KWS Tsavo Mobile Vet Unit – who was occupied with another operation – they opted to keep trying without anaesthetising the bull. Finally, the team managed to loop straps behind him and attach them to a vehicle. Inch by inch, they pulled him from his muddy trap. She refused to leave. Standing guard, she watched every moment of the rescue, alert, protective, unwavering as machines carefully dug a pathway to free her trapped baby. And when that path was finally made, she pulled her baby out herself. What more do we need to understand about the supreme love of an elephant mother for her calf ? Equally moving is the professionalism with which the Tamil Nadu Forest staff from Valparai, Anamalai Tiger Reserve, rescued the calf and successfully united the mother and the calf. Heartfelt thanks to FD, DD Rangers, Foresters , Guards and the entire team of ATR for making this extraordinary rescue possible #TNForest #elephants
