In 1969 we lived on Adak Island out in the Aleutians. My dad bought a giant WWII Army ambulance that was painted bright international orange. We named it “the Gorn.” Star Trek reruns were about the only things the sailors would show during the few hours a day they’d broadcast. Bought it because it was 4-wheel drive and you could work on the engine from inside the cab. It was bigger than anything else on the island, though, so we were afraid to take it off-road because nothing else could pull us out if we got stuck! Me and the other kids would play “Star Trek” on Captain’s hill, fighting to see who got to be Spok. Time is weird: WWII seemed as long ago then as it does now, but 2005 seems like yesterday!
