This week in 1942, the prototype XB-29 flew for the first time. Today, there are only two airworthy B-29s remaining. Last year, we had the chance to take a flight in the B-29 Superfortress “Doc.”

First airborne was XB-29 41-002 from Boeing Field on 21 September 1942: Eddie Allen in command, Al Reed as co-pilot, about 1 hour 15 minutes of stability and stall checks. Allen reportedly climbed out saying, “She flew!”
