This weekend I've been working on a watercolor simulator based (as much as possible) on real physics. It's built on Curtis et al.'s watercolor model (SIGGRAPH 1997) with a fluid layer, drifting pigment and wet paper fibers. I decided to explore this because I love watercolor painting, and when... show more

Looking good! I also did some watercolor simulations

Love it!

That's so cool. I did a test with 2d oil painting brushstrokes for my website like half a year ago. I love old school computer graphics, made me feel fairly nostalgic. Do you know if there's a model for oil coloring, too? I like the thick texture.

Thanks for the feedback! I will look into it and will ping back here if I find anything good!

This is gorgeous! I've been working on a similar app but with less detail on the execution of realism. A daily journal app where you doodle how you feel, and you get to draw with musical instruments accompanying your note making while you take a rest.

Thanks for sharing Benji!

Likewise, I’m feeling inspired by your share! It’s truly beautiful. Ty also for the follow, 🙏

I started an oil painting simulator and want to add watercolor next. I love the wet physics you're using

We should merge then at some point!

Oh that would be fun - I have yet to collab on a project

Real physics behind pigment spread is such a cool rabbit hole

Indeed.

Basing it on real research from '97 instead of faking the look is what makes this actually impressive.

this is the coolest thing I’ve seen in a while, nailed it

Thank you man!

I wonder how much you could make the paper texture interface with the bleed, would look quite cool

oh. my. gad.

I am hearing the rattle of Fractal Designs Painter patent portfolio already... amazing work!

Thank you Julik. Painter is still the OG! (but I guess it can't run in a browser tab...)

Very cool! You might be interested in checking out @IOivm's InkField project:

this is so beautiful! would love to try something like this myself!

I'll put the V2 online!

Looking forward to seeing it!

Could you open source this project and link the GitHub page perhaps? I would love to build on top of this and share it further

I'll share the V2 repo as soon as I get a chance to work on it. Probably next week-end!

Great!

🫶

already so promising, love those weekend experiments. you have to open source it ! :)

V2 is now live!

I sketched something in the same vein... 9 years ago apparently...

wow...

I'll share more on that soon!

This is the kind of “controlled chaos” that makes watercolor addictive. Most tools try to give artists more control — you went the opposite way and tried to preserve the best moment of losing it. Once the fluid / pigment / paper model feels right, this could become a whole new primitive for creative tools, not just a pretty demo.

Looks super cool, I was just thinking about how I could incorporate some of this into a design. Look forward to seeing more.

More on that soon!

Beautiful

This is awesome, thanks for sharing

try ink painting!

so far looks good

Wow! It renders insanely good

superr innovative since digital brushes only simulate the stroke itself and not what the water does after!!

this is really nice

Thanks Kosta!

Sweet

hell ya

Very cool!

When GitHub?!!!!

I'll share it with the V2!

this looks good!

Thank you Andrew!

this is so cool! when can we access it!?

This is a first prototype but I'll put the V2 online this week!

lovely!

Looks amazing - would dust off my wacom for this

That’s the moment in painting with watercolours that I love, too! Nice work!

Thank you Jamine!
