Thomas Sankara is widely recognised as the finest leader in Burkina Faso's post-independence history. He became the president of the country which was then known as Upper Volta at the age of 33 in 1983, and during just 4 years in power, his revolutionary government recorded some of the most significant positive changes in living standards and human development indices in the country's entire history. In this clip taken from the 1991 documentary "Thomas Sankara: l'espoir assassiné," directed by Congolese filmmaker Balufu Bakupa-Kanyinda, Sankara describes how the ideology that animated his approach to governance was shaped by his realisation that it made no sense to run an entire country for the benefit of a tiny portion of its population, while the majority of its people remained trapped in multidimensional poverty and immiseration. Despite his impressive achievements as president of Burkina Faso, Sankara was later assassinated in a 1987 French-backed coup led by his close companion Blaise Campaoré. In 2014, Campaoré was forced to flee to Cote d'Ivoire where he remains to date, after his forces responded violently to popular protests against the proposed extension of his 27-year rule. The current Burkinabé president Ibrahim Traoré openly acknowledges Sankara as a major influence and inspiration behind his government's revolutionary ideas.

BURKINABE HONOUR SANKARA’S LEGACY On Tuesday, it was the 37th anniversary of Thomas Sankara's assassination. That may seem a long tome ago, but the people of Burkina Faso still come out in large numbers every year in the capital Ouagadougou to remember him. At this year’s event, government officials, ambassadors and members of civil-society came together to pay tribute to his life and legacy. They gathered at the Thomas Sankara Memorial - the site of his assassination. African Stream was also there - speaking to Burkinabe about the significance of the ceremony within the context of the newly formed Alliance of Sahel States (AES). The AES is a pan-African, anti-imperialist confederation seeking to unify Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger. It’s a project that’s very much in line with Sankara’s vision for his homeland and Africa. Today, his life and legacy are more important than ever as the current president of Burkina Faso, Ibrahim Traoré, works to put the country back on a 'Sankarist' path. While Sankara only spent four years in power in Burkina Faso, he transformed the country through literacy campaigns, public-health drives, environmental projects, infrastructure development, food sovereignty, increased power for women and more. He is believed to have been murdered by his right-hand man Blaise Compaoré, who was found guilty of his assassination by a Burkinabe court in 2022. Many also believe that the CIA and France were involved in the plot. Compaoré ruled over Burkina Faso for 27 years after Sankara's death until he was overthrown in a popular insurrection in 2014.

One of the most influential anti imperialist thinkers in the United States, Parenti spent decades exposing how power actually works beneath the language of democracy, development, and humanitarianism. In this 1986 lecture at the University of Colorado Boulder, he dismantles the myth that foreign aid is about helping people. Parenti argued that foreign aid functions as a subsidy for empire, transferring wealth from ordinary people in the Global North to elites in the Global South who protect multinational interests. Drawing on economists like Kenneth Boulding and Thorstein Veblen, he highlighted the missing class dimension, that those who profit from imperial investments are not the ones who pay the costs of maintaining them. BURKINA FASO'S INSTITUTE OF BLACK PEOPLES In the 1980s, Thomas Sankara dreamed of creating a world-class centre dedicated to Black history and culture. It was to be called the Institute of Black Peoples, a project which Sankara took very seriously. In 1986, he took concrete steps to prepare for the creation of this institute. The following year, he was assassinated, and nothing substantial came out of his idea. That is, until the current president of Burkina Faso, President Ibrahim Traoré, took the torch. On 30 June 2026, the Institute, now relaunched under the name Farafina Institute of Black Peoples, appointed its steering committee. The committee includes some of the most prominent faces in the French-speaking Pan-African movement, such as Nathalie Yamb and Franklin Nyamsi. The president of the Institute is former Prime Minister Dr Apollinaire Joachimson Kyelem de Tambela, who was involved in the Democratic People's Revolution under Thomas Sankara. During that time, Kyelem de Tambela was studying in French; however, he organised a diasporic cell of the Committees for the Defence of the Revolution. Burkina Faso has been working to forge closer relationships with Africans across the continent and the diaspora since Traoré came to power. The country is a part of the Pan-African Alliance of Sahel States Confederation, which seeks to unify Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger. In November 2025, Burkina Faso welcomed a large delegation of diasporic Africans from the United States and the Caribbean, to whom the country granted permanent residency status.

She also condemned African leaders and elite for not representing Africans appropriately, not trying to decolonize education or even stand up for Africans in diplomatic forums. She pointed out how there is an absence of books on Kwame Nkrumah, in his own country Ghana. Nkrumah was considered one of the founding fathers of Pan-Africanism and his efforts to liberate Ghana from British rule, setting up the Organisation of African Unity and the progress he achieved as leader of Ghana is stuff of legend. He was removed from power after a western backed coup supported by the US, Canada and the Uk with the collaboration of the CIA and MI6 alongside the coup plotters. As such his omission from curriculums, and the effort to erase his legacy in his own country is indeed telling. Ironically, The New Africa Foundation Convention event was cancelled, as the Ghanaian government revoked the event's permit at the last minute, citing an "unforeseen" state event scheduled for the same venue. THE BOOK THAT TERRIFIED THE UNITED STATES Kwame Nkrumah scared the United States to such an extent that the CIA plotted his overthrow in a coup d'État executed in 1966. In a memorandum to then-U.S. President Lyndon B. Johnson, Robert W. Komer, a special assistant to the U.S. National Security Affairs, wrote, "Nkrumah was doing more to undermine our interests than any other black African. [However], the new military regime is almost pathetically pro-Western." To honour his lifelong commitment to struggle, we are remembering a few of his words of wisdom. In this clip, Ture dispelled the pernicious myth that socialism is a “white” concept and showed how Africans were discouraged from exploring it. He spoke directly from experience, drawing on his illustrious, decades-long record in the struggle for African liberation worldwide. Ture’s lifelong commitment to pan-Africanism took him from his childhood in a decolonising Trinidad and Tobago to the United States, where he chaired the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) and initiated the Black Power movement.
