Most will have a hard time with this. The GREAT conservative Thomas Sowell started out as a Socialist. I was raised in the 70’s. In the early 1900’s there was no stronger Christian Family than the Black American Families. Our Fellow Black Americans were attacked by the Deep State/CIA with Abortion, STD’s, Welfare, Drugs & Thug life culture, & we accepted it because of race differences. The welfare state has been more destructive to the black family than slavery just by restructuring the incentives. In 1960, nearly a century after emancipation, only about 22% of black children grew up in single-parent households. By 1990, after the Great Society welfare expansions, that number had more than tripled. Thomas Sowell has long shown this wasn’t the lingering shadow of slavery or some vague “legacy.” The destruction of the black family was the direct result of welfare policies that subsidized single motherhood and penalized marriage. The incentives changed, and family structure collapsed accordingly.

If you go back to 1960, 95% of children in the U.S. were raised by two married parents, regardless of social class—rich kids and poor kids alike. Fast forward to 2005, and for upper and upper-middle-class families, that number dropped only slightly, from 95% to about 85%. So in those households, the vast majority of kids were still raised by two married parents. For working-class and poor families, it was a different story. In 1960, 95% of kids had two married parents. By 2005, that had plummeted to around 30%. And that’s exactly what I saw growing up. I was a kid in 2005, and in the neighborhoods around me, intact families were rare. I had five close friends. None of us were raised by two married parents. I was in foster homes. Two friends were raised by single moms. Another by a single dad. Another by his grandmother because his mom was on drugs and his dad was in prison. That’s a pretty common picture of working-class families in America now—a lot of family breakdown.
