Ivor the Engine originally puffed across our television screens in the late 1950's/early 1960's on ITV. Most of the black and white episodes were later remade in colour, in a BBC series first shown during 1976 and 1977. Ivor remained a popular repeat fixture on BBC1 until 1987.

“The black community was at its strongest economically while being segregated.” This is true. In the 1930s to 1960s, when actual legal racism existed, most black children grew up in a two-parent home. Black marriage rates at the time actually trumped white marriage rates. Now, with all the progress we’ve made, 75% of black children grow up without a father, and black women today have a lower marriage rate than black men and than white women. So the answer to all the black community’s problems CANNOT be “systemic racism,” if they were doing better back when racism was more prevalent and was actually written into laws.

The result: • The 1960 census showed the first signs of a decline in black marriages, with acceleration in later years. • In 1980, 31% of all black first-born children were born to teenage mothers. • By 1992, 54% of all black children were living only with their mothers. • From 1990 to 1994, 77% of first births to black women were premarital. • By the 2000s, 75% of blacks with a high-school degree or some college were not married. • Less than half of black students graduated from high school in 2005. • Today, black males between the ages of 14 and 17 commit homicide at ten times the rate of white and Hispanic males of the same age combined. • In many urban areas, the black illegitimacy rate is well over 80%. The welfare state has been more destructive to the black family than slavery just by restructuring the incentives. In 1960, nearly a century after emancipation, only about 22% of black children grew up in single-parent households. By 1990, after the Great Society welfare expansions, that number had more than tripled. Thomas Sowell has long shown this wasn’t the lingering shadow of slavery or some vague “legacy.” The destruction of the black family was the direct result of welfare policies that subsidized single motherhood and penalized marriage. The incentives changed, and family structure collapsed accordingly.

That’s a pretty common picture of working-class families in America now—a lot of family breakdown.

Jerome Powell's high interest rates mean high mortgage rates, which means homeownership is out of reach, which means couples delay marriage and having children all because the Fed refuses to lower interest rates. The last time rates were this high, inflation was 6.5%. Today, inflation is 1.9%. Why haven’t rates come down? When my dad was growing up in the 1960s, 50% of 30-year-olds were married *and* owned a home. Today, only 15% are married and own a home. That’s the most important—and the most depressing—economic statistic in America.

We kick off Black History Month with the inaugural NBA Pioneers Classic. We celebrate and honor the legacy of Chuck Cooper, Nat “Sweetwater” Clifton, and Earl Lloyd, the league’s first Black players. They were pioneers of the game who paved the way and changed the trajectory of the NBA forever. Our very own Bobby Portis played the role of NBA Pioneer Earl Lloyd in the 2023 biopic “Sweetwater.” Lloyd was the first Black player to play in an NBA game in 1950.
