Over the past few years, India has also diversified its oil imports, buying crude from 40+ countries including the US, Russia, Brazil, Guyana and several African nations. So the idea that India depends entirely on the Middle East is simply not true. Even in the case of tensions in the Gulf or a disruption around the Strait of Hormuz, only about 40% of India’s oil passes through that route, and contingency plans—including alternative routes and naval protection for shipments—are already in place. Behind the scenes, the system is far more prepared than people think. India has built strategic underground petroleum reserves, expanded its pipeline network to nearly 26,000 km, and monitoring teams track fuel stocks and supply chains 24×7 to ensure there are no disruptions. On prices, the global market has seen volatility, but domestic impact has been limited. Delhi petrol today is about ₹94.77, slightly lower than ₹95.41 in 2022. Policies over the past few years have also helped cushion shocks—India stepped in to buy discounted Russian oil after 2022, expanded refining capacity, blended 20% ethanol in petrol to reduce imports, cut excise duties to soften price spikes, and expanded CNG stations and piped gas connections across the country. Our energy imports continue uninterrupted even as supply chains choke. We are able to ensure easy availability of fuel for our citizens even as countries worldwide struggle to make energy ends meet. We are able to do this because India has diversified its import basket to 41 sources from the basket of 27 that existed in 2014. India not only secured its energy needs, but emerged stronger, more resilient, and better prepared for the future. While many countries struggled with shortages and soaring prices, India protected its citizens because we planned ahead, diversified supply chains, strengthened strategic reserves, expanded sourcing options, and took difficult decisions when required. PM Modi Ji’s vision has never been limited to managing crises. His vision is to use every crisis as an opportunity to build the future. India’s ethanol blending programme has grown from approximately 1.5% to the threshold of a 20% blending economy. Flex-fuel technology is creating new opportunities for consumers and farmers. E85-compatible vehicles will provide more fuel choices, lower operating costs, and reduce dependence on imported crude. At the same time, India is positioning itself at the forefront of the global clean-energy transition. Through the National Green Hydrogen Mission, the country is laying the foundation for a new energy ecosystem that can power industries, create jobs, attract investment, and strengthen energy independence.

Russia is one of the largest crude producers with over 9 million barrels/day. Imagine the chaos if this oil, amounting to about 10% of the global oil supply of around 97 million, vanished from the market. It would have forced the world to reduce its consumption, and since the consumers would be chasing the reduced supplies, the prices would’ve spiralled to over $120-130. Russian oil was never under global sanctions. Sensible decision makers around the world were aware of the realities of global oil supply chains and how India was only helping the global markets by buying discounted oil under a price cap from wherever we could. Some commentators who do not have an understanding of the dynamics of energy markets pass unnecessary judgements on our policies. India, under the leadership of PM Narendra Modi Ji, has been a net positive contributor to global energy price stability, while at the same time we successfully navigated the trilemma of energy availability, affordability and sustainability. India continues to provide clean cooking gas to our 330 million households at the lowest prices in the world, while we provide universal clean cooking to more than 103 million beneficiary families of PMUjjwala Scheme at just 0.4 dollars/kg or just 7-8 cents/day. In contrast, India’s defence procurement is far more balanced—driven by indigenous manufacturing and other global partnerships. India also has the capacity to emerge as a global manufacturing hub—especially in critical sectors. Under PM Shri Narendra Modi Ji, Bharat is aptly placed to lead this transformation. During my visit to Washington, DC, I spoke with think tank members and young professionals & emphasised how deepening US-India trade and technology ties is an economic imperative & a strategic necessity.
