Footage captures a police officer shooting 17-year-old Erik Cantu while he was eating a hamburger in his car. On October 2, 2022, Officer James Brennand of the San Antonio Police Department shot Cantu in the parking lot of a McDonald's in San Antonio, Texas. Brennand, responding to an unrelated disturbance, noticed Cantu eating in his vehicle and recognized the car as one that had evaded him at a traffic stop the previous day. Brennand opened Cantu's driver-side door and fired when Cantu reversed the vehicle. Cantu was immediately placed on life support and remained hospitalized for several weeks. Brennand was fired within a week and charged with two counts of aggravated assault by a peace officer, later being indicted for aggravated assault and attempted murder.
