Elon Musk on how technology changes civilization: "I think technology is the thing that causes these big step changes in civilization." He compares the internet to the Gutenberg press. Before the printing press, books were extremely rare. Even if you had a thirst for knowledge, there simply weren't enough books to access. But the internet changed everything. Musk described the internet as humanity developing a "nervous system." Before the internet, information mostly traveled from one person to another. Access was limited. Now, almost anyone can access almost all of humanity's information from anywhere. You could be in the middle of the Amazon jungle with a Starlink terminal and potentially have access to more information than the U.S. president had in 1980. Technology doesn't just give us new tools. It changes how civilization itself works.

SpaceX now has over 10,000 Starlink satellites in orbit (and growing), providing internet data service to every corner of the earth. Even ships at sea or aircraft in the sky can receive high speed internet service. Over 2/3 of the active satellites in orbit are Starlink now. And it won't create any long term trash in orbit. The orbits are so low (480 km to 550 km) that even if SpaceX were to lose control of one, the small satellites will run out of fuel within 5 years. Then they get dragged back into the atmosphere and burn up. Every satellite is in a lane to avoid other Starlink satellites. They all are connected to a collusion avoidance system and can make small course adjustments if needed. Starlink can provide high speed internet anywhere on the planet without having to bury expensive fiber cables underground or undersea. All you need is a small dish which scans the sky for the closest satellite to provide internet connectivity.

The internet is not just a communication tool; it is a lifeline for work, education, health, business, services and daily life. I therefore refer back to my plea of 28/9/2023 made whilst serving as an MP at the Forum on Internet Freedom in Africa 2023 that took place in #Tanzania.

I realize many of y'all that follow me were born after the 90s but I can assure you - the 1990s were *likely* the best time to be an American. We had *many* of the modern convinces we enjoy today without the internet as we know it today. America was CLEARLY the greatest nation in the history of the world and most government schools were safe. In less than 30 years we have devolved into the nation we live in today.
