The Justice Wave in Bengal On August 9, 2024, a 31-year-old postgraduate trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College was raped by one Sanjay Roy in the hospital. Her body was recovered in a semi-nude state with blood coming out from her eyes, mouth, and genitals. On August 10, Sanjay was arrested. On January 18, after the CBI took up the case, the accused was sentenced to life imprisonment till death. The CBI also booked the RG Kar principal and a police officer on allegations of tampering with the evidence. What did Mamata do? She handed over the case to the CBI, but only after the Kolkata High Court intervened. She took out a protest march on August 16.While doctors were protesting, she played a gimmick and offered to resign, which never happened. She urged people to “return to festivities” during Durga Puja, months after the rape. The family alleged they were offered a bribe of Rs 10 lakh by a police officer soon after the murder. Mamata suggested the government would fund a memorial in the victim’s name. Come 2026, Ratna Debnath, the mother of the rape victim, joined the BJP, fought from the Panihati seat, and is now leading with 2,763 votes. All the drama failed Mamata and her party.
