My mother is in desperate need. She was diagnosed with alcoholic induced dementia, but is now in a safe group home thankfully. She is 5 months sober, and I have unfortunately ran into a roadblock disabling me from supporting her entirely financially to keep her there. I need as much help as I can get, so I set up a go fund me to help keep her there a little bit longer until I can bring her closer to me. Excited to share that our paper is published in nature today! This incredible work was led by the amazing Ipshita Zutshi, one of the most inspiring neuroscientists I met during grad school. She has taught me so much about the pure love for science as well as the strength and resilience needed to navigate its challenges. As a junior PhD student, I was fortunate to learn from her example—her unwavering passion to ask the most important questions in the field, her strength in the face of adversity, and her thoughtfulness as well as warmth left a lasting impact on me. During moments when I felt overwhelmed or the road forward felt hopeless, her strength inspired me to push forward, to try just one more time. Having a role model like her early in my career has been invaluable, and I am deeply grateful to learn from her.

This golden retriever was dumped on the street looking like death. Skinny as a rail. Fur falling out in patches from mange. Runny eyes. So thin the woman who found her could wrap one hand around her waist. Most dogs in that shape would have been broken. Birdie walked right up to the people who stopped for her. No fear. No bite. Just trust. They took her in. Treated the mange. Fed her. Gave her a bath that turned the water black. Quarantined her so she wouldn’t spread it. Then one day they let her inside a house for the first time. She didn’t know what to do with herself. Zoomies. Tail going. Pure joy. A few months later that same dog is thick, shiny, and living in a real home with people who actually want her. Some pieces of garbage left her to rot. Good people refused to walk past. A year and a day ago, I lost a very special friend. What started through Make-A-Wish became a friendship I’ll always treasure. Daily, I would get a video or text from her and her friends…She brought so much joy into my life, and I miss hearing from her. I have yet to break the habit of waiting for a video from her. They truly made me smile. When I learned she wasn’t doing well, I got on a plane to Minnesota to be with her. She passed while I was in the air. Her family showed me a kindness I’ll never forget by letting me say goodbye. They also gave me her favorite blanket and the journal she kept about our time together. I still haven’t been able to read it. One day, I will. There isn’t a day that goes by that I don’t think about her. She reminded everyone around her how much light one person can bring into their day and their lives, no matter how short their time here. Missing you always. ❤️
