You mean when MTV set Michael Jackson and Britney up. They told him that he would be getting a real award. And told her to give him a fake award. Know the backstory before you bring stuff up.

Michael didn’t think anything, they told him he was receiving the Award and he thanked them. Why should he think it was a joke orchestrated by MTV? That was so corny and cretinous. ESPECIALLY after he saved MTV from bankruptcy MULTIPLE times.

Michael Jackson didn’t “think” it.. MTV had invited him for that specific purpose. They had even put it up on their website which they later took down. It was their way of tricking him into coming and increasing their ratings at his expense. MJ didn’t even celebrate birthdays.

Now why would Michael Jackson fly to NY with a SPEECH ON HAND just so they can say Happy Birthday? Think before you post!

U have a bit of misconception there Michael Jackson was told by VMAs that he is going to get the artist of millennium award.

Ah yes, that *hilarious* mistake he made when MTV had announced on their website prior to the event he’d be getting the award (for ratings, I’m old enough to remember). Oh, and the ACTUAL award/trophy he was presented also in that clip. 🥱 If no award, why the trophy?

On August 29, 2002, during the MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs) at Radio City Music Hall in New York City, a segment marking Michael Jackson’s 44th birthday became one of the most widely discussed moments in the show’s history. Britney Spears introduced Jackson on stage as the “artist of the millennium” during a birthday tribute organized by MTV. She presented him with a cake and a decorative statuette as part of the celebration. Jackson, appearing to believe the presentation was a formal honor, gave an emotional acceptance speech in which he thanked his family, fans, and God while reflecting on his career. However, there was no official MTV “Artist of the Millennium” award. The segment was intended as a birthday tribute rather than a competitive or formal award presentation, which led to confusion. After the segment, host Jimmy Fallon made light of the moment during the broadcast. He joked about the idea of the award being widely given out backstage, saying, “I’d like to accept the Artist of the Millennium award myself. I guess they’re giving them backstage… everyone’s getting them.” He also commented on Jackson’s appearance, saying, “Hey, Michael Jackson looks great for 44, doesn’t he?” — a remark that some viewers felt added to the awkwardness of the situation. He was later seen crying in his car on the way back to the hotel. According to his longtime makeup artist and friend Karen Faye, Jackson had been reluctant to attend but was persuaded after being told he would receive a significant award that night.
