Garage Warfare at Sea: Lessons from Ukraine for the Pacific In a potential Pacific conflict, one near-certain outcome will be the neutralization of major shipyards. This differs from World War II precisely because long-range precision weapons like those of today did not exist back then. Large shipyards will be heavily targeted by missiles, leaving only smaller, less visible facilities operational to repair smaller vessels. The ability to conduct major repairs on large warships will be lost early in the conflict, that’s my prediction. In 2022 and 2023, much of the media and analyst attention focused on the industrial capacities of Russia and Ukraine. I published several reports on the subject at the time. After Russia intensively bombed Ukrainian industry throughout 2023 and into 2024, Ukraine effectively lost most of its industrial base, retaining only small workshops and a few underground facilities with minimal capacity beyond basic repairs. This fueled the explosive growth of the drone industry, which expanded relentlessly in garages and small shops, evolving into over 500 companies today producing everything from motors to software. There was no shortage of targets, with Russia deploying thousands of vehicles on the front lines. I foresee the same dynamic in a Pacific conflict: without major shipyards for large repairs or new construction, decentralized production of USVs, UAVs, and UUVs will surge in small boatyards and facilities with pier access. Just as land targets were plentiful in Ukraine, maritime targets will be abundant at sea. Future one-way UUVs, USVs, or even UAVs will be lighter than today’s thanks to solid-state batteries weighing roughly one-third less, while CL-20-based explosives will significantly increase tandem warhead power, allowing strikes on critical parts of targets. Hundreds or thousands of a variety of unmanned systems could be produced weekly across dozens or hundreds of small maritime workshops, a natural, organic process, exactly as we witnessed in Ukraine. The success or failure of this model will hinge on maintaining supply chains for this network of small producers. Assuming that large warships and major shipyards will remain operational in a high-intensity missile conflict in the Pacific is, in my view, overly optimistic. It’s time to start thinking seriously about how to fight a war with few ships and against thousands of unmanned threats.

We are week into SCOTUS and this is what we've learned (all over the board tbh): - Large brokers tell us they are getting more commitments from shippers, not less. Shippers are concerned that they are next and want protection. - Managed trans appears to be a massive winner. - Some shippers are reevaluating small carriers (due to compliance risks and cost) and looking to move more freight through large brokers, not less. While others have stopped loading brokers altogether. - Large shippers are already evaluating their brokers for financial viability and requesting larger insurance policies. - Asset-carriers tell us that what eats them alive isn't the big lawsuits, but the very small claims and wonder if brokers will be pulled into the small claims that are handled outside of insurance, which could result in 1-2 claims/1000 loads. At a cost of $20k each, that could result in $20-40/load just in administrative costs of dealing with small claims. - Insurance costs are going up for brokers, but no one really knows how much. Ranges we are hearing is 3-10x. - Conditional safety rating is really difficult for small carriers due to the slow resolution of those ratings at the FMCSA, which is overwhelmed and under resourced - We had our first lawsuit involving a large broker that was previously thrown out under summary judgement amended to include the freight broker

He has "significantly more visit time than any other prisoner", with 2 hours, 4 times a week, in a room described as "more informal and comfortable", where he can take in food he's bought from the canteen. He has 120 people on his visitors list and has had 93 visits. He can use the phone for 4 hours a day and has made more than 1,250 social calls. He has a television, a laptop - on which he receives emails "in their hundreds" - a CD player and a DVD player in his cell. He attends a weekly bible session and has daily visits from a member of the chaplaincy team and daily visits from an NHS doctor or nurse. As someone who was locked up for 9 months for exposing a rape gang - and spent 6 weeks in TOTAL solitary confinement - let me tell you, this in NOT EVEN prison, LET ALONE segregation. When I was in solitary I had ZERO time outside of my cell other than to shower (which was a narrow concrete wet room that I was locked into from the outside) or to walk alone around a tiny square yard with high wire fencing all around it ONCE in 6 weeks. NO visits, NO Bible sessions, NO gym, NO pool, NO laptop, NO emails, NO CD player, NO DVD player, NO daily chaplaincy visits, NO daily NHS doctor or nurse visits, NO 3 hours out of my cell, NO 2 hours with friends and family, NO 2 hours 45 mins painting and decorating, NO 4 hours of phone time every day, I WAS NOT EVEN ALLOWED TO ATTEND CHURCH DURING EASTER. Tommy was adamant that he would rather go to prison for contempt of court than to take down his video about a schoolboy. Whether you like it or not, this was his decision. Of course, Tommy fans will say that he should not be locked up (despite him pleading guilty to contempt of court)... But please do not pretend that he is languishing down the block! The man is enjoying more leisure time than most of us on the outside who are working full-time jobs. If he is struggling to cope with ALL of those privileges, he wouldn't last 5 MINUTES in a real jail, take it from someone who knows.

It’s clear that the UCP government does not care about the needs of Calgarians. Just 34 days ago, the UCP promised that funding for the Green Line was “100 per cent” secure, even for the new shorter version. Now they've decided to pull their funding. This reckless decision could mean the end of a badly needed transit project and a massive waste of over $1 billion that has already been spent as construction is well underway. The UCP has chosen to give up 20,000 jobs directly associated with this project, including 1,000 people employed today who will be thrown out of work by this decision. Not to mention all the private sector jobs that will come from the redevelopment and densification of lands surrounding the future stations. Let’s be clear. This decision will drive both public and private sector investment out of Calgary and Alberta because there is no certainty. Who will ever bid on projects if the province’s signature is no longer worth anything and they can pull funding at will? They are pretending they are looking at new options, but we’ve seen this movie before. Minister Dreeshen’s proposed alignment has been studied. And studied. And studied. It won’t work. It dumps SE commuters nowhere near where they need to be and expects them to trudge to a red or blue line station to get on a train that is already packed. It’s a dream from someone who has clearly never taken transit in Calgary. The UCP government has chosen to make this a political issue. The UCP wants to make this about me. It’s not about me — it’s about doing the right thing for the tens of thousands of Calgarians that will be hurt by this decision. As always, the UCP would rather pick a fight than win for citizens. The Green Line is a required investment for the future of Calgary. It’s an investment in ending the congestion on Deerfoot and Stoney Trails, and the Centre Street corridor. It’s an investment in the environment, in quality of life, in getting people to and from work, and kids to and from school. We simply have to look at the congestion nightmare that is Toronto today because that city didn’t invest in transit when they should have. This is untenable and the people of Calgary deserve better than to be used as a political football. The premier needs to intervene directly, take control of this file from her minister and advisors and work with the city to find a way forward.

Ford: "A simple, efficient, flexible ecosystem to deliver a family of affordable, electric, software-defined vehicles – the first of which is a midsize, four-door electric pickup that will be assembled at Ford’s Louisville Assembly Plant for U.S. and export markets. Its launch is scheduled for 2027. It will have a target starting MSRP at about $30,000 USD." Ford says it is going to deliver a family of affordable, adaptable electric vehicles that offer multiple body styles for work and play — including for export — and whose LFP batteries will be assembled in America, not imported from China. Additional specifications for the midsize electric truck – including reveal date, starting price, EPA-estimated battery range, battery sizes and charge times – will be communicated later. Ford’s $2B investment in their Louisville Assembly Plant is in addition to its previously announced $3 billion investment in BlueOval Battery Park Michigan, which will build the prismatic LFP batteries for the midsize electric truck starting next year. Together, the investments total approximately $5 billion, and between the two plants, Ford expects to create or secure nearly 4,000 direct jobs.
