Meanwhile, Canadian kids can’t find jobs, and instead of fixing that, Tim Hortons went to Ottawa asking for permission to replace them. In a May 27, 2024, lobbying... letter to then immigration minister Marc Miller, Tim Hortons admits: “without international workers and international students... business would struggle immensely.” Then comes the ask: raise the Temporary Foreign Worker cap from 20% to 30%. That’s nearly one in three workers not being Canadian — but they didn’t stop there. The company also pushed for a dedicated food service immigration stream with a pathway to permanent residency, locking in a permanent replacement workforce. At the same time, they want international students working up to 30 hours a week — hours that used to belong to Canadian teenagers trying to get their first job. And here’s the most infuriating part: Tim Hortons openly admits these jobs matter. They say these jobs help “develop a wide range of skills and build promising careers” and serve as “a stepping stone to integrate into our country.” Exactly. That’s why those jobs used to go to Canadian kids. Instead, youth unemployment is climbing, with nearly one in five young Canadians struggling to find work. Entry-level jobs, the first rung on the ladder, are disappearing. Strip away the corporate language and it’s simple: lower wages, replace local workers, and lock in a dependent labour pool. Tim Hortons loves to wrap itself in the Canadian flag, but why won't they hire Canadians?🍁 Rebel News visits a Tim Hortons location and the company's corporate headquarters in Toronto in an effort to get answers to why this supposedly proud Canadian company is hiring temporary foreign workers instead of Canadians. Canadian companies hiring temporary foreign workers is out of control. The summer job is merely a memory, part-time jobs for students are vanishing. And meanwhile, the unemployment rate is a shocking 7.1%. So why are so many companies — profitable companies with revenues in the billions of dollars — hiring temporary foreign workers? Well, it’s strictly business, baby. Companies can pay temporary foreign workers less money. And these people are far more “compliant” than “domestics” given the prospect of losing one’s job likely means a trip back home. Meanwhile, temporary foreign workers see this opportunity as a means to become permanent residents and eventually full-fledged citizens. It might be win-win for corporations and temporary foreign workers. But it is a losing proposition for taxpaying Canadian citizens who want to work. People are not amused. A recent Abacus Data poll indicates that 44% of Canadians want to see the temporary foreign worker program scrapped given the high unemployment rate — especially among young people. And even though Canada’s biggest foodservice company is Tim Hortons — a company that loves to wrap itself in the Canadian flag — Timmy’s (which is now owned by multinational corporation Restaurant Brands International) is actively seeking temporary foreign workers rather than Canadians. Every penny counts, it would seem. Shameful. We recently visited a Tim Hortons at the corner of Lawrence Avenue and Yonge Street in north Toronto. According to the federal government’s job bank, this franchise is taking advantage of the temporary foreign workers program. One ad posted in July of this year indicated it was seeking to hire someone at a rate of $36/hour. Apparently, this store could not find a Canadian willing to work for $36/hour and therefore needed a temporary foreign worker for the position. Does anyone believe that? If you do, then we have some beachfront property for sale in Saskatchewan… The manager at this store was very evasive when we asked questions. We left our contact information hoping to speak to the franchise owner, but at time of writing, never heard back. It also appeared that the lion’s share of the staff at this Tim Hortons restaurant was from the Philippines. Our next stop was the palatial head office of Tim Hortons in downtown Toronto. Even though this company has an entire media relations team, nobody would receive us. Cowards. Are you disgusted with major companies gaming the system is such a fashion? Then kindly sign our petition at Tim Hortons may be making money hand over fist (RBI’s revenue jumped 5.4% in 2024 compared to the previous year). But it clearly has a public relations problem given its strategy of shunning Canadians. So I went to the government's own temporary foreign worker website and did a quick search. I was shocked to find 93 Tim Hortons locations are actively advertising for temporary foreign workers. Literally at the same time their spin doctors are claiming they’re hiring Canadians. So I printed out the job postings, fired up our billboard truck, and headed to one of the foreign-staffed Tim Hortons to ask for the manager. The Tim Hortons I went to was offering $36 an hour for a restaurant manager. Their government of Canada job listing claimed that no Canadian would do the job. The Tim Hortons executive in the store told me he'd “never seen” the foreign worker ads before. Really? They're on the government TFW website. Anyone can look them up. I showed it to him live, on camera. He should tell that to the father I met outside, whose 21-year-old son can't find work. I spent nearly an hour out front talking to passersby. Not one person — not a single one — said Tim Hortons should keep hiring foreign workers over Canadians. And many of the people I spoke with were immigrants themselves. Tim Hortons claims to prioritize hiring Canadians but job postings tell a different story Tim Hortons has positioned itself as a Canadian icon, wrapping itself in the flag while simultaneously lobbying the government to expand and entrench the Temporary Foreign Worker (TFW) program. Lately, it seems Tim Hortons has been feeling the fall out of their deteriorating brand. As Dunkin’ Donuts announces its expansion into Canada, the once Canadian staple now claims it will commit to hiring local — whatever that means. However, their active job listings on the government of Canada’s Job Bank tell a difference story. Tim Hortons currently has roughly 800 active postings recruiting temporary foreign workers across the country, including management roles paying up to $36 per hour. One such posting for the rural, southeastern Ontario Havelock location was removed only recently. As Rebel News continues to expose Tim Hortons’ heavy reliance on the TFW program — which is nothing against the workers themselves who are simply navigating a system ripe for exploitation — this has triggered tough questions about corporate priorities while Canadian youth struggle with a growing jobs crisis. One in five young Canadians report being unable to find an entry-level job, and positions such as a counter worker at Tim Hortons used to give those entry-level opportunities to youth. Instead, many locations now appear dominated by temporary, foreign staff. Street interviews at the Tim Hortons location in Havelock revealed strong public sentiment toward hiring Canadians first. “I think it’s terrible,” said one patron, on the influx of foreign labour. “We’ve got to stay true to our core as well. For two weeks, we’ve been telling the truth about Tim Hortons and their gross plans to hire foreign workers instead of young Canadians. Our reporting has been a problem for them, because they’ve just started a huge PR campaign to rebrand themselves as Canadian — likely because Dunkin’ Donuts is about to open up hundreds of locations in Canada later this year. Tim Hortons thinks it can win back customers by pretending to be Canadian. But we discovered that, even though Tim Hortons says they are hiring Canadians, they are still actively bringing foreign workers to Canada by using the government’s Temporary Foreign Worker program. So we went to some of those Tim Hortons locations with job listings and asked them why they claim to be hiring locals when, in fact, they are still hiring foreigners. Why lie? One of those Tim Hortons managers lied about it, saying he didn’t know anything about it, while I was literally holding his restaurant's ad for foreigners in my hands. So they courageously kicked us off the property, saying we couldn’t talk to any store managers or owners anymore. They thought maybe that would stop us from exposing their lies. Yeah, no. We kept reporting on their plans to import hundreds of foreign workers. We talked to people going to the Tim Hortons drive-through — and 100% agreed: stop hiring foreigners; hire Canadians instead. Well, that made them go nuts. They had their top lawyer send us a threat letter, telling us that if we go back to ask any more questions, they “will report the trespass to police and pursue all available remedies, including charges under the application act and civil action.” Translation: if we ask them any more questions, they’ll call the cops, press charges, and sue us in civil court, too. Have you ever seen a more thin-skinned bully than Tim Hortons? By the way, it’s obvious why they’re panicking — they’re literally the number one user of foreign workers of any restaurant chain in the country. They are the worst of the worst. So we went out again and again and again — but, because we respect private property, we just stood on the public sidewalk. Even still, the crazed lunatics at Tim Hortons literally called the police. So if you set up Tom Hortons, and made it look the same, that would be a trademark violation — because you’re trying to trick people into thinking it’s the real thing. But criticizing Tim Hortons is not a trademark violation. In fact, criticism and satire are specifically permitted under trademark law. This is literally like an editorial cartoon, very gently ribbing Tim Hortons for hiring foreigners instead of Canadians. But now they’ve filed a trademark dispute, a kind of lawsuit, against us at Shopify. And we have to hire lawyers to respond — and to do so within 48 hours, or we could have our t-shirt suspended from the site, and potentially have our whole store shut down. They’re doing whatever they can to destroy us, to stop us from revealing the truth about their foreign worker scam. So what should we do? Should we be like the rest of the media and cheer for Tim Hortons? Of course not. Kelowna Tim Hortons posts Rebel News ban on its front door — here's what customers said Tim Hortons has spent weeks trying to silence Rebel News with trespass orders and legal threats, but each failed attempt has only revealed more about the so-called "Canadian" coffee chain's foreign hiring policies. A tipster recently reached out to let me know that a particularly thin-skinned Tim Hortons location in West Kelowna has taken things to a whole new level, posting a trespass notice aimed at Rebel News right on its front door for every customer to see. Apparently, management thought that publicly announcing Rebel News was unwelcome would somehow stop us from reporting on the chain's continued reliance on Temporary Foreign Workers at a time when many Canadians are struggling to find work. So I made my way to that location to ask passersby the important question Tim Hortons despises: Is it time for Tim Hortons to abandon its foreign-worker-first agenda and start putting Canadians first? The responses were revealing. I spoke with an 18-year-old who told me he'd been looking for work, including at Tim Hortons, for three months without success. I also heard from residents who had already noticed the anti-Rebel News sign for themselves and disapproved. In contrast, one passerby defended the current system, arguing that "us Punjabis" deserve the jobs and adding that "the natives were here first." I tried to tell him that Canada's foreign worker program doesn’t incentivize hiring Indigenous Canadians either, but he drove off in a hurry. So here’s Patty Hajdu, Canada’s Jobs Minister, explaining why it’s totally fine that young Canadians can’t find work. She actually said this: “Temporary foreign workers are about 70% less than a few months ago. Low-wage TFWs are less than 1% of the workforce.” Sounds good, right? But then in the very next breath she admitted the program is still “critical” in areas with low unemployment, the kind of loophole that allows McDonald’s and Tim Hortons to keep importing cheap foreign labor while Canadian kids sit at home without jobs. And when she was pressed on that abuse, she didn’t deny it. She bragged that the process is “onerous.” Employers have to post on the Job Bank for four weeks, pay a fee, do an interview. Then Ottawa “tracks” the applications. In other words, she defended the bureaucracy, not Canadian workers. But the real kicker came when she was asked about youth unemployment. She admitted it’s spiking, but shrugged it off with a metaphor: “Many economists say youth are the canary in the coal mine.” The canary in the coal mine? Imagine being twenty years old, can’t find a job, rent’s through the roof, and your government calls you a canary. So let’s translate this. If you’re a Temporary Foreign Worker, life is good, Ottawa built an entire program to protect your job. Why is a St. Catharines Tim Hortons proudly displaying a legal threat letter sent to Rebel News? We were tipped off that a Tim Hortons location in St. Catharines, Ont., had posted the legal threat letter that was sent to us on June 1. So, we paid them a visit with our big, beautiful billboard truck in tow. You may recall our recent reports regarding Tim Hortons, exposing the company for lying through its teeth at a recent presser. Tim Hortons implied they would go back to hiring Canadian citizens, which would be great news if only it were true. Alas, Tims is still making use of the Temporary Foreign Worker Program! If you check out the federal government’s job board, Tims currently has about 90 positions available under this program. Sure, Tim Hortons loves selling to Canadians. But hiring Canadians? Not so much. Tims was not amused by our coverage. And so, they decided to play hardball. The company was so infuriated that they sent Rebel News a legal letter. We were informed that Rebel News staffers are essentially persona non grata at all Canadian Tim Hortons. Yours truly was especially singled out, as Tims' legal eagle noted that I am now banned for life from going to any Tim Hortons store in Canada! We’re not making this up! Here’s an excerpt from that letter: "David Menzies, due to past behaviour, is not, for any reason, permitted access to the premises, including parking lots, landscaped areas, and drive-thrus of any Tim Hortons restaurant in Canada, any and all manufacturing and distribution facilities owned or operated by TDL across Canada and the Tim Hortons offices in Montreal, Calgary and Toronto." Overreaction much? But here’s the thing: We were tipped off that a Tim Hortons location in St. Catharines, Ont., was proudly displaying the legal threat letter that was sent to us on June 1. How bizarre! Why would they do that? Is it to further a vendetta in a most juvenile fashion? Apparently, head office sent a copy of that letter to all stores. It seems that it is up to the franchisee whether to display it. But again, what’s the ostensible policy reason? To name and shame us? To put customers on high alert so that, if they see me in the parking lot or drive-thru, they will call 9-1-1? How pathetic can you get? Well, if Tim Hortons is dropping the gloves, then so be it. We recently paid a visit to that particular St. Catharines Tims with our big, beautiful billboard truck in tow, to name and shame Tims for its lies regarding the Temporary Foreign Workers Program. As it turns out, just a few klicks away from that St. Catharines Tim Hortons restaurant is where Tim Horton himself, the man, died. Tim was killed in a single-vehicle car crash on February 21, 1974. He was a member of the Buffalo Sabres at the time, and he was driving back to Buffalo after a game against his old team, the Toronto Maple Leafs. Tim's legacy lives on in the restaurant chain that bears his name. Yet, we wonder: Would he be proud of what it has become? The donuts are no longer baked from scratch. The restaurants are not clean — don’t even dare venture into the washrooms. Canadian citizens are passed over for jobs in favour of noncitizens. Why is a St. Catharines Tim Hortons proudly displaying a legal threat letter sent to Rebel News? We were tipped off that a Tim Hortons location in St. Catharines, Ont., had posted the legal threat letter that was sent to us on June 1. So, we paid them a visit with our big, beautiful billboard truck in tow. You may recall our recent reports regarding Tim Hortons, exposing the company for lying through its teeth at a recent presser. Tim Hortons implied they would go back to hiring Canadian citizens, which would be great news if only it were true. Alas, Tims is still making use of the Temporary Foreign Worker Program! If you check out the federal government’s job board, Tims currently has about 90 positions available under this program. Sure, Tim Hortons loves selling to Canadians. But hiring Canadians? Not so much. Tims was not amused by our coverage. And so, they decided to play hardball. The company was so infuriated that they sent Rebel News a legal letter. We were informed that Rebel News staffers are essentially persona non grata at all Canadian Tim Hortons. Yours truly was especially singled out, as Tims' legal eagle noted that I am now banned for life from going to any Tim Hortons store in Canada! We’re not making this up! Here’s an excerpt from that letter: "David Menzies, due to past behaviour, is not, for any reason, permitted access to the premises, including parking lots, landscaped areas, and drive-thrus of any Tim Hortons restaurant in Canada, any and all manufacturing and distribution facilities owned or operated by TDL across Canada and the Tim Hortons offices in Montreal, Calgary and Toronto." Overreaction much? But here’s the thing: We were tipped off that a Tim Hortons location in St. Catharines, Ont., was proudly displaying the legal threat letter that was sent to us on June 1. How bizarre! Why would they do that? Is it to further a vendetta in a most juvenile fashion? Apparently, head office sent a copy of that letter to all stores. It seems that it is up to the franchisee whether to display it. But again, what’s the ostensible policy reason? To name and shame us? To put customers on high alert so that, if they see me in the parking lot or drive-thru, they will call 9-1-1? How pathetic can you get? Well, if Tim Hortons is dropping the gloves, then so be it. We recently paid a visit to that particular St. Catharines Tims with our big, beautiful billboard truck in tow, to name and shame Tims for its lies regarding the Temporary Foreign Workers Program. As it turns out, just a few klicks away from that St. Catharines Tim Hortons restaurant is where Tim Horton himself, the man, died. Tim was killed in a single-vehicle car crash on February 21, 1974. He was a member of the Buffalo Sabres at the time, and he was driving back to Buffalo after a game against his old team, the Toronto Maple Leafs. Tim's legacy lives on in the restaurant chain that bears his name. Yet, we wonder: Would he be proud of what it has become? The donuts are no longer baked from scratch. The restaurants are not clean — don’t even dare venture into the washrooms. Canadian citizens are passed over for jobs in favour of noncitizens. And now the corporate bigwigs are banning independent journalists who have the temerity to report the truth. While social media is flooded with Tim Hortons “food” videos, I have one simple question: WHY?? Why the fuck does anyone still go there? This woman just pulled the lettuce off her bagel sandwich and it looks like it’s been sitting in a swamp for a week. Slimy, brown, rotting, and literally falling apart in her hands. She’s holding it up like evidence in a crime scene. “Count your motherfcn days, Tim Hortons Canada.” And she’s not wrong. We’ve all seen the videos .. wilted lettuce, stale everything, cold “fresh” baked goods, and the same excuses every single time. Meanwhile they keep crying they can’t find workers while importing thousands of TFWs. Canadians used to actually like Tim Hortons. Our message: Don't give Tim Hortons another dollar. Rebel News recently dropped by a couple of Tim Hortons stores in the Greater Toronto Area — one in North Toronto and one in Aurora. We didn’t pay a visit to grab a cup of coffee or a box of Timbits. Rather, we were there to prove that Tim Hortons recently served up a whopper of a lie. Tims, which is owned by a Brazilian hedge fund called 3G Capital, has faced growing pressure to change its hiring practices. Despite being Canada’s largest foodservice company, Tim’s has been exploiting the Temporary Foreign Worker Program to hire noncitizens. Alas, Tims has suffered some bad PR due to these hiring practices. And so it was that Tims went into damage control mode recently. Tims' CEO publicly stated that the company is going to go back to hiring Canadian workers again. That’s fantastic news! Except for one hitch: It’s fake news. That’s because the CEO was lying through his teeth. Indeed, he recently personally registered as a lobbyist to keep Canada's immigration laws as loose as possible — so that Tim’s could continue exploiting the TFW Program. While the company claims it is now hiring Canadians, Tims is STILL all-in when it comes to hiring cheap foreign labour. As if a multi-billion-dollar foodservice conglomerate needs corporate welfare in the first place! And yes, we have the proof. It’s right there in black and white on the federal government's Temporary Foreign Worker Program website. There are some 90 active Tim Hortons jobs from coast to coast up for grabs. Clearly, Tim’s is still hiring foreigners rather than Canadians, despite their false pronouncements. So we brought our big, beautiful billboard truck to the Toronto and Aurora locations.
