do you know what it's supposed to look like at the end or do you do the Hard edges soft edges process so many times til it's good? I'm an artist myself since I can think and still don't know how to do it lmao

It depends. Sometimes I have an idea of the mood I want, and from there everything lines up, the lighting, the design, etc. (having references on the side helps a lot too).

How long did the piece take in total?

I haven't timed myself, but I'd say about 4 hours :)
