Tin Cup feels like an appropriate rewatch this weekend given #TheMasters are here. Kevin Costner’s given us a lot of quality sports films over the years, but this might be my favorite. Film’s just so incredibly easy to watch. Costner is hilarious in this role. A quality ‘90s film

Robert Duvall is so damn good in Open Range- he is so damn good. I’ve never met anyone who dislikes this film. Duvall & Kevin Costner absolutely bring the thunder in this film in a throwback Western that is so rewatchable. This might be what I rewatch tonight in Duvall’s honor.

For the Love of the Game is constantly left out of the “all-time best sports films” conversation for reasons I can’t explain. I really value that this film was shot at old Yankee Stadium back in the ‘90s when the Yankees really had their luster. Kevin Costner tells a great story about the late George Steinbrenner attempting to cancel production at the ballpark & how it impacted production of the film. Costner’s love of sports - whether it be football, golf, or baseball - has heavily influenced his career over the years. This is absolutely some of his best work. Great story. Great film.

Prisoners is a movie I specifically rewatch every autumn. I saw this in theaters with my college roommate back in September of 2013 & it just feels appropriate to watch this as Halloween approaches. I’ll probably rewatch this masterpiece once every autumn for the rest of my life.

Open Range is so much better than I remembered. I wrote about this earlier this week after just learning about Robert Duvall’s passing, but I just gave this a rewatch today & Duvall & Kevin Costner are perfect casting together. The filmmaking here is exceptional. Duvall thrives.

I rewatched The Insider with my dad this weekend & every time I rewatch this movie, the better it gets. This is absolutely Michael Mann’s second best film and this inches closer to Heat with every revisitation. Every last corner of this movie is fucking prefect. Pacino/Crowe/Plummer are so damn good. It’s not just the story, the script itself holds up so well. And then there’s Mann, who laces this movie with close-ups that bring up close to each character’s paranoia. I just can’t believe this film’s quality.

Splitsville, not Materialists, is Dakota Johnson’s best work this year. I like both films, but Splitsville has turned into one of the year’s biggest surprises. This is such an incredibly easy movie to sink into & feels like a true romantic comedy (actual laughs ensue). See this!

Brothers is an emotionally disturbing film that I still find to be wildly entertaining largely because of the performances. Toby Maguire, Jake Gyllenhaal, and Natalie Portman all put in career-best work here. I recently gave this film a rewatch & its quality surprised me.

The Killer climbs up my David Fincher rankings with every rewatch. My only real issue with this film is that I never had the opportunity to see this in theaters. The lack of theatrical release here really hurt this film’s public reception. But this is still vintage David Fincher.

Father of the Bride was my introduction to Martin Short & Steve Martin. This is the most 90s film ever. I miss this era. I’m reminiscing over Short’s best films because his new Netflix documentary just dropped- which I intend to watch this weekend. I love Martin Short dearly.

Concussion was supposed to be Will Smith’s big push for an Oscar back in 2015, but the film wasn’t really received that well by audiences or critics. In hindsight, this is definitely a quality sports film that I don’t think the NFL wants people to see. Smith is really good here.

I really wish Quentin Tarantino would return to filmmaking. I know I give him grief for the ridiculous opinions he’s given lately (i.e. Paul Dano) but we’re coming up on 7 years without a QT film & that just hurts. I recently rewatched Pulp Fiction on a flight & it’s so easy to sink into. All of Tarantino’s films are out of this world.
