Multi-axis 3D printing with curved layers! 🖨️ Researchers from the The University of Manchester introduced a neural network-based computational pipeline as a representation-agnostic slicer for multi-axis 3D printing. Traditional 3D printing works like stacking pancakes, flat layers on top of each other. 🥞 This often requires temporary support structures that get thrown away after printing, wastes material, and creates weaker parts. Multi-axis 3D printing can print along curved paths that follow the object's natural shape. This eliminates support structures and makes stronger parts. But figuring out these curved paths is mathematically complex, you need to avoid collisions, respect what the printer can physically do, and optimize for strength. The neural network solves this automatically. It learns to create a "field" around the object, then extracts curved printing paths from this field. Because the entire process is differentiable (translation for non-math specialists, meaning you can optimize it end-to-end), the AI can directly optimize for manufacturing goals like "no support structures needed" and "make it as strong as possible." They're producing large amounts of fabric such as mutton cloth, and 400 tonnes of fabric a month. The fabric is transferred to their Chegutu factory for sewing into different type of clothes. 3D printing of a patient-specific aortic dissection model to investigate blood flow dynamics using MRI, with a particular focus on 4D Flow MRI sequences. The model will be reconstructed from medical imaging data and manufactured using the Formlabs Form 4L with the new Flexible 80A Resin V2. This project is part of the PhD research of a vascular surgeon, Florent LE BARS, and aims to improve our understanding of flow patterns within the true and false lumens of aortic dissections. As part of the project, we are supporting Samuel GUIGO from W.INN, the Centre de l’Innovation en Santé at CHU de Brest, to document and share the development of this innovative patient-specific 3D printing approach. This is an 80,000-tonne hydraulic forging press from China’s Northern Heavy Industries, one of the largest metal-forming machines ever built. But it is not simply a machine that bends metal like traditional presses do.
