Yuval is talking about requiring licenses to be issued for software that people write and give away. With a few words he waves away our human rights of free expression, freedom of association, and our property rights to create, including how we choose to distribute our work. It is unbelievably fascistic, and also illustrates something Elon Musk frequently talks about, the regulatory state eventually regulating all human activity to a complete standstill.

@LePoint @AlbinMichel "Artificial Intelligence" is a term created in the summer of 1956 by a group of people needing a title for their research so they non-unanimously selected that misdirected term out of their egos and it's proving to be far more damaging than open-source code of weapons of war.

"The one thing that's going to be truly future proof is judgment. What is the biggest challenge when you have a thousand AI engineers writing code? AI slop. In an era when you can do everything, the question is which of these things matter. On the engineer side, it is evaluating the code. Which of this code is even valuable? You can have AI engineers writing beautiful code that could be wrong, that could have bugs in it, that could be vulnerable. Someone needs to review it. Make sure to have a human review at some point, especially critical code that is in the core of your system. On the product side is judgment around what needs to be built and evaluating. Some people keep saying not to learn to code on the grounds that AI would automate it. We will look back on that as some of the worst career advice ever given. AI will make software development easier, just like the compiler did. Or open source. Or the cloud. More people should learn coding, not less. NVIDIA just released a new open source transcription model, Nemotron Speech ASR, designed from the ground up for low-latency use cases like voice agents. Here's a voice agent built with this new model. 24ms transcription finalization and total voice-to-voice inference time under 500ms. This agent actually uses *three* NVIDIA open source models: - Nemotron Speech ASR - Nemotron 3 Nano 30GB in a 4-bit quant (released in December) - A preview checkpoint of the upcoming Magpie text-to-speech model These models are all truly open source: weights, training data, training code, and inference code. This is a big deal! Jensen said in the CES keynote yesterday that he expects open source models to catch up to proprietary models this year in a number of categories. NVIDIA is putting their weight behind making this happen. (As Alan Kay said, the best way to predict the future is to invent it.) The code for this agent is open source too, of course. You can deploy it to production with Modal and Pipecat AI cloud, or run locally on an NVIDIA DGX Spark or RTX 5090.

Open source/weight models are often used in regulated industries like Health Care or Financial Services, where they handle personally identifiable data, and can't send it to proprietary LLM providers. We recently chatted to Vaibhav (VB) Srivastav about the partnership VS Visual Studio Code and Hugging Face inference providers have to let you use open weight models directly in your IDE! Something that surprised me was just how fast inference providers like Cerebras make it to generate code! In this episode we made a journaling CLI tool using Qwen! I personally love open source and hope more of these models will become small enough to run locally!
