With Lake Mead and Lake Powell down to 33% capacity, the state is scrambling to import 100 billion gallons of water annually. To put that in perspective, that’s about the weight of 1,142 Empire State Buildings... The state has set aside $430 million to make this happen, but earlier plans to desalinate ocean water were ditched because of their $5.5 billion price tag. Apparently, affordable water solutions are harder to find than rain in the desert. To make things worse, Arizona’s water agency just had $500 million yanked from its budget—talk about bad timing. Officials are now inviting companies to pitch solutions, with the review process starting in early 2025. But completing the project could take up to 15 years.
