Today, after months of requests, I toured the Broadview ICE Processing Facility. The facility has no food vendor, no medical care, and detainees have to use toilets in the middle of shared cells. These are in no way suitable conditions to be holding anyone — period.

I am appalled after conducting my oversight visit today at MDC Brooklyn and learning more about the conditions of detention. Civil immigration detainees with no criminal records — who should not be in custody of any kind — are being held under the exact same restrictive conditions as criminal defendants. 14 hours locked in cells, rationed phone time, insufficient medical care, and dirty water. This is inhumane and unacceptable. ICE must immediately change these unjust and draconian conditions.
