The rent in Providence is too high and we need real solutions to bring down costs for families. And I understand why rent control sounds compelling, but the reality is that it has consistently been shown to hurt those it is meant to help. In Cambridge, in Berkeley, in Portland, in St. Paul and more, rents actually went up under rent control and new construction plummeted. My plan provides direct rent relief now and lowers costs long-term through continued new construction. I look forward to working with the City Council to continue addressing the root cause of our housing shortage and bring down costs for all our neighbors.

I held a Staff meeting today. Many reports on supplies for our troops—weapons, all procurements. Contracts and supplies are in place. But we need to accelerate deliveries and increase the supply of systems and weapons that help save more of our soldiers’ lives. More orders for drones. More investment in the development of robotic systems. And more deliveries of essential weaponry. All necessary directives have been issued. Our industry has the potential. Countries, particularly in Europe, are ready to work with Ukraine and invest in our arms production. Our diplomats have clear tasks. We need to increase our partners' funding for Ukraine's defense. This must also be a key performance indicator for Ukrainian diplomacy.

But up until now, more than 70 cents of every dollar of military capital spending by our government has gone to the United States. In Congress, I’m a cosponsor of the Yes In My Backyard Act (YIMBY) bill, which will prioritize federal dollars for communities that reduce the red tape limiting housing construction. I’m also a champion of getting shop class back in junior high. We’ll fix our housing shortage by reducing red tape, building more housing units, and ensuring young people learn the skills they need to build homes right here in Southwest Washington.
