Today, Box is announcing major new AI agent capabilities to let customers tap into the full value of their unstructured data. First, we’re announcing all new updates to the Box AI Studio to make it even easier to build AI agents that tap into your enterprise content for any... job function, business process, or industry specific use case. We are also expanding our set of foundational agents that customers will be able to use to work with their enterprise content, including new features like search and research on unstructured data. Next, we’re announcing Box Extract to enable customers to use AI agents seamlessly for complex data extraction from any type of document or content. This makes it easier than ever to pull out data from contracts, invoices, research data, marketing assets, medical charts, and more. Finally, we’re introducing Box Automate, a new workflow automation solution within Box that lets you deploy AI agents across enterprise content-centric workflows. With Box Automate, you can design your business process in a simple drag and drop builder and then drop in AI agents at any step in the process. This ensures agents execute tasks at the right steps in a workflow every time. Best of all, our AI agents and workflow tools are designed to work across any system our customers work within, whether it’s leveraging pre-built integrations, Box APIs, or the new Box MCP Server. Ultimately, all of these capabilities come together to transform how companies can work with their enterprise content. Software has historically only been good at automating work that deals with structured data, which is why ERP, CRM, and HR systems have been mainstays of enterprise software for so long. The data in these systems fits neatly into a database, and the workflows are very ripe for automation. But it turns out most of the work in the world deals with unstructured data. It’s ideating through research documents, working with a client on contracts, reviewing details for a new product launch, looking at a patient’s healthcare record to make a diagnosis, working through due diligence documents for an M&A deal, and so on. For the first time ever, we can begin to bring all new insights and automation to this work with AI agents. At Box, we’re incredibly excited to be on this journey to help customers transform how they work with their most important data.show more

Introducing the new Box Agent. The Box Agent works across your entire Box file system, maintaining all your security and access controls, and is hyper tuned for working with enterprise content. This means you can now ask questions from all your enterprise content, search for files that were impossible to find before, deploy an agent on specific tasks on subsets of documents, analyze complex data sets, and generate or edit documents and spreadsheets via the agent. You can have the Box Agent search across your Box account to prepare for a sales meeting, analyze customer sentiment reports, process a large set of contracts for legal risk, provide insights into product development, leverage existing knowledge to answer RFPs, and thousands of other use-cases. 90% of enterprise data is unstructured data. This means most enterprise knowledge is sitting in inside of research reports, marketing assets, presentations, roadmap files, contracts, HR documents, and more. This is the critical context that agents need to be able to answer questions about a business, automate workflows, or serve up to other agents. We’ve been grinding on this for a quite a bit, and due to recent AI model advancements we’re now ready to release it to customers. Previous model generations had a difficult time knowing when to give up or keep going on a search, when to browse for files vs. use queries, how to rank files appropriately to know which version of content to use, how to handle large amounts of context to comb through, and more. Due to recent breakthroughs from models like GPT-5.4, Opus 4.6, and Gemini 3, we’ve seen major gains in tool calling, code execution, advanced reasoning, and more. Combined with an agent harness tuned to Box context, now it’s finally possible to have an agent that can work across your file system on long running tasks and actually deliver high quality results. Best of all, because the Box Agent works with any leading AI model, you’ll quickly get the gains coming out of the major labs as major new models are released. Further, openness at Box is key, so you’ll be able to call up the Box Agent from Box’s APIs and MCP server, so you can interact with Box intelligently from any other AI system. We know work happens everywhere, and we want to ensure you can access to the content you need from those places. The new Box Agent is available starting today, rolling out now for Enterprise Plus and Enterprise Advanced customers.

This is probably the biggest news yet in software going headless, and will bring knowledge work agents to the masses. The new ChatGPT agents have access to any of the tools and data you want to work with, with complete coding and tool use available to them. Here's an example of a custom sales assistant agent uses Box as a knowledge source for accessing enterprise content securely to answer questions and generate new content on the fly. The workflows can obviously vastly far more complex as the agent can use any of the tools within Box available via MCP and CLI. This precisely what agents will start to look like for knowledge work. You'll be able to spin them up in the foreground or background to help augment work. Big opportunity right now for headless platforms, and for all the new builders and designers of these agents in the enterprise.

In the past, it wasn't possible for companies to tap into their unstructured data. But that's now changing with AI. On Greylock Partners Change Agents, Aaron Levie shared "We see a future where you can actually begin to bring agents to all that data and answer any kind of question the customer has, and then eventually be able to automate any kind of workflow that the customer has."

Box CEO Aaron Levie says AI has been “unequivocally” a net positive for software. “You look at infrastructure providers—the Cloudflares of the world—totally on fire, because agents need sandboxes, they need compute, they need network, they need gateways. Great business.” “For us, we have reaccelerated growth far past our internal plans because it turns out that enterprises need core systems to be able to manage their unstructured data.” “Agents need to be able to work with that unstructured data to make decisions or move information through a workflow—whether it’s all of your contracts, your research materials, marketing assets, or financial documents.” “Now imagine an enterprise with 10,000 employees. How do you ensure that those agents continue to go after the actual canonical records, the actual documents that are the real sources of truth and the authoritative versions of that data?” “That means you need platforms.” “And all of that is creating more value for these platforms.”

Right now the main paradigm that we think of agents in is chatting back and forth, but the biggest use of tokens will come from agents that are just always on running in the background doing work for us, or ones triggered from a workflow. Agents will be working 24/7 in our workflows processing data, reviewing and generating documents, moving data between systems, writing code, accelerating decision making steps, and more. In Claude's new Managed Agents feature, in a couple minutes you can wire up an agent that can read contracts when they come into Box to review them, and then assign a task in Linear with the critical information from the contract. But this could have been any workflow, like reviewing documents for client onboarding, invoice processing, M&A due-diligence, data extraction pipelines, and millions of other use-cases. And integrating data across any system. This is only possible when you can have long-running agents that can complete real work in the background, accurately. Agents have the ability to execute code safely, leverage tools, access a compute sandbox, and connect across systems is clearly the architecture of the future. The industry is now making it easier and easier for enterprises to build and deploy these agents.

It’s wild watching AI Agents work with software. Here’s ChatGPT connected to Box running a deep research task on market analysis documents. The future is just giving AI Agents the data and systems to comb through and having them work for you in the background.

The new Codex is another jump in what agents will look like for knowledge workers. Agents that can code, work with tools, and use computers, can begin to execute long running tasks in the background for all areas of work. This can mean drafting reports, setting up data rooms for a merger, reviewing contracts, helping onboard clients, generating marketing assets, processing invoices, and more. With the Box plugin inside of the new Codex, you can begin to automate almost any kind of work with enterprise content. And importantly, being able to work across multiple apps is a huge point of leverage because we can now far more easily connect our tools together.

"The data that we've been working with as people now becomes extremely useful in a world of agents. You're having this rebirth of the file system." Aaron Levie on Navigators with Paul Klein IV on why unstructured data, the 90% of enterprise data that has always been the hardest to automate, is now the biggest unlock for AI agents. And why the real AI conversation is a context conversation.

The reason we’re so excited about AI at Box is because AI Agents thrive on unstructured data. Most companies are sitting on a goldmine of intelligence that they’ve never been able to fully tap into, and now can.

Google’s new Agent2Agent protocol is a key step toward a future of AI Agent interoperability. No single tool has all the data a user or business needs for most workflows, so we need Agents to be able to talk to each other. Salesforce will have AI Agents that understand the inner workings of CRM, Workday will have AI Agents that understand HR workflows, Box has AI Agents that understand content and documents, and so on. It’s easy to conceive of a world where we have tens of thousands of these tool Agents and then billions or trillions of customized Agents that are extensions of those. So openness becomes key. Workflows need data from multiple systems to complete the task — like a sales report that needs documents and CRM data or an HR task that needs HR policies and employee details — and that’s where A2A comes in. This protocol gives AI Agent providers a way of talking to each other and simplifying the way that Agents communicate, understand each other’s capabilities, and so on. It’s great to see more interoperability, along with MCP, emerging in the AI space right now, as this will define the future of most IT stacks.

File systems are quickly becoming a core abstraction for AI agents for knowledge work. By having access to a file system, agents can effectively manage context, process any amount of information, and create new files and data. The challenge is that local file systems are inherently limited in size, lack governance capabilities, and are inherently personal -not collaborative- in nature. Now, with the Box API and LangChain's deepagent SDK, you can bring the full power of a secure, collaborative cloud file system to your AI agents. Repo ↓
