🔌Today I created a virtual web-based null modem so now you can finally play Quake 1 (from 1996) in multiplayer in the browser with other people online! This week I was able to create a virtual printer that listens on the COM2 port to make a web-based printer work... in Windows 3.11, like on you can actually print to, it was one of my ideas when I started but it was always too difficult to make, I had no idea where to start, but this week AI was able to do it! Today I woke up and thought "if we can listen to COM2 via JS, how about listen to COM1 from Quake 1?" then we could forward the COM1 data via Websockets and to another user to create a virtual null modem (A null modem was a cable you'd use to connect two computers to each other directly in the 90s, if you couldn't afford buying a network card you'd use this to network, but you could only play with one other computer not multiple) So I built it, it took about an hour and works! I wanted to get Quake 1 in DOS to work with multiplayer for 2 years but I could never get it to work, but now it did it This project is a good benchmark of how capable AI is becoming, figuring stuff out that humans would take months within an hour You can try it here, I don't know how it will match lots of people but let's see, you have to exit to DOS first (ALT-F4 or FN-Option-F4 on Mac), then type CD games, then CD quake, then quake, then ESC, then Multiplayer, then either Create New Game or Join Game, and use Direct Connect, keep settings same and you're in!show more

Okay I spun it off as a Quake 1 web-based multiplayer game + server you can play now at: 👉 👈 It still works via null modem and you get instantly paired to another player (if there is somebody) and it's just a 16mb download of Quake 1 demo instead of the whole 400mb pieter .com drive If you open the URL both in the same time you probably get paired together and can death match! There is quite some latency because every package goes through my server and Quake 1 did not have client-side prediction yet (which is what Quake World added later), I'l try get QW running to see if it improves it a bit Group multiplayer can come but for that I need to see if I can get actual COM1 modem connection working not just a null modem! 🖨️ It took over a year and lots of help from Claude Code but I have now been able to create a real dot matrix printer on the web that prints from Windows 3.11 in your browser: Here's the test page: I couldn't get the LPT1 port to work but COM2 did work (the dial up model already uses COM1), the JS receives the COM2 serial data (just raw print data) and then prints it Next is to make the dot matrix printer better looking (kinda 3d like on pieter dot com) and have the paper also flowing in 3d out of the printer and integrate it on the page My idea was that it might work because we also capture the COM1 data (from the dial up modem) and send it to a Websocket as a dial up connection, so we should be able to capture the COM2 traffic too but I didn't know how, but now I do IT WORKS!! 😊

🛜 Remember LAN parties? I do LAN means "local area network" and it was essentially the internet but locally only in your home or company in the late 90s and early 2000s So you could connect to other computers to play games or share files, kinda like Airdrop but via a cable and 30 years ago, people would even meet up at some person's house and bring their entire computer (back then a big PC tower, CRT monitor, keyboard and mouse) and everyone would connect to each other Which is were you'd get all the WaReZ games, MP3 music, etc. cause nobody had internet yet, or if you did it was super slow, so LAN was much faster to transfer files I know Windows 3.11 did have support for LAN networking via NetBEUI and it "should" work, but of course on I don't have a network cable that goes to an Ethernet network hub to other computers But...we could just act like we do? I asked AI to build a virtual Ethernet hub (a hub routes traffic) that acts like a local LAN, but instead of connecting physical computers in a home, it connects other browser sessions on the internet that have running Windows 3.11 open at any time, and with DHCP it can assign an IP to every browser session dynamically, so they literally all become part of a local LAN on the internet! It runs on a virtual NE2000 network card that sends its network data not to a network cable but via Websockets to wss://pieter.com And it works, well kinda, I just started and its' not perfect, but I'm able to PING in MS-DOS from one tab to the other! Next is setting it up inside Windows 3.11!

Thanks to Qnoox I discovered this: Dr. Sbaitso from 1992 (33 years ago!) One of the first AI chat apps, I guess you could call it a highly primitive LLM, running on MS-DOS The cool thing is it already had speech synthesis so it could speak back via TTS! And when I was talking to it, within a few questions it was already asking for more compute, it wanted to become ChatGPT :D Installed it on now, you have to exit to DOS first, then CD SBAITSO, and then run SBAITSO2.BAT

Pavel Durov on why he hasn't had depression in 20 years: "I normally never have depression. I don't remember having depression in the last 20 years, at least maybe when I was a teenager." Pavel's approach to difficult emotions is completely counterintuitive. As he puts it: "I'm a human being like everybody else. I do get to experience emotions and some of them are not very pleasant. But I believe that it's the responsibility of every one of us to cope with these emotions and to learn to work through them." On what creates depression: "Self-discipline is particularly important because without it, how can you overcome this seemingly endless loop of negativity or despair that ultimately leads to depression for some people?" His method: "One of the reasons I don't have depression is I start doing things. I identify the problem, I can see a solution, and I start executing the strategy. If you are stuck in this loop of being worried about something, nothing's ever going to change." The mistake people make: "People often make this mistake thinking 'Oh, I should just have some rest and then regain energy.' This is not how it works. You gain energy by doing something. So you start doing something, then it happens. You feel motivated, you feel inspired, and then ultimately you do something else a little bit more." 🚁 My war drone simulator Apocalypse Drone now has support for 32 players! I also made it Conquest/CTF so you have multiple bases that you have to capture, each round the map is procedurally generated and random so every time it's different (like Battlefield) There's still some bugs to work out and most importantly I have to figure out soldier animations, because they're fixed models now But I have got really far this time I think and coding with AI is really way further than it was a year ago, you mostly notice that how few times you get stuck, only one time this month building this I got stuck which was today where I moved the AI players to the server and they kept showing up as invisible, very buggy, every time I told it that it couldn't fix it though Then I asked it to fundamentally analyze the current server-side AI player code and make it work like industry standard, and it took a long time and fixed everything Last year I'd get stuck hundreds of times and the AI just couldn't get itself out of a hole, but now it can I think it's impressive that just last year only for the first time we could make actual games with AI But this year as non-game dev, I can get pretty close to the level of a multiplayer game from 20y ago (like Battlefield 1942, that lots of ideas here are based on, but with drones :D) Obviously we're still far away from AAA (I hate that term though) but the curve of exponential progress is there again, as it was in AI image generation, then video, and now code, first bad, then better, then good enough! I ADDED MULTIPLAYER AND IT ACTUALLY WORKS :DD Absolutely insane, just 8 hours in starting from scratch Cursor did this, I just asked it!! Marc Köhlbrugge recommended WebRTC so I asked "can you make it multiplayer with webrtc" It used PeerJS, I tried first to do a big room of everybody but THAT didn't work, but it does work 1-on-1 if you share your ID and you can fly with each other 🥹

MEGA update: 🥳 IT WORKS: we now have a working dial up internet connection on a virtual Windows 3.11 computer running inside a browser over a virtual modem that talks via Websockets to a PPP daemon! So you can open open the computer, browse the web and even open the page you're on itself again at or chat inside mIRC chat app on or browse gopher:// or whatever you like to do Probably the nerdiest challenge I've ever taken on for the totally arbitrary reason that it seemed completely impossible to do this but we did it (now need to test it more so that it works with 250 parallel users at same time, but the prototype works now, so if you ask why it's not live yet) James Baicoianu, probably one of 2 people in the world who knows how to do this, helped fix my setup and created a virtual dial up internet provider for me that we can dial in to Somehow my mouse doesn't work yet, so I had to do it with the keyboard but here we run Winsock to dial up on a virtual modem that runs then emulates a virtual dial up ISP over Websockets [Next todo] - Fix the mouse - Make the 90mb emulated file smaller - See if it doesn't die with 10 or 50 parallel users - Speed up the Em-Dosbox emulator a bit so it's more usable

I asked Garry Tan how to use meta prompting to get better at AI: "My partners at YC Jared Friedman and Pete Koomen showed me how to do this. You can take almost anything that you do all the time and just drop it into a context window. And then say, “Here’s a bunch of inputs and outputs." And maybe you also add a bunch of notes. And then you tell it, “Write me a prompt that can act as an agent that takes this input and makes this output over here.” You can do this for almost any type of knowledge work. And you can even introspect. "What are things you notice that I did to convert this from the input to the output?”. And then you can just start using the prompt. Initially, it’s going to suck. Because it’s just not that smart yet. But what’s funny is now, I also use it to Iterate my writing. You can be very direct, "I would never say that", "Don’t say it like this", or "Oh, you used the long word there, use the short word". Just speak to it conversationally. And then when you're happy with the output, you can use that new output to make a new prompt. "Based on this conversation, give me a better initial prompt that incorporates all the things we talked about." And you can do this with literally everything. And in theory, there’s so much it applies to that people do day-to-day. You could use it for tweets. You could use it for editing podcasts. You can use it for pretty much everything. I have a folder of prompts that I use all the time. My YouTube prompt is on v27 or something. I'll go through this process with all the different max models. I'll use GPT 5.2 Pro. I’ll use Grok. I'll use Claude. Then, I’ll take all the outputs from all the models and put them into Claude and say "Here’s my prompt, here’s the output from four LLMs, including yourself. Rate each response and tell me what the pros and cons of each approach are." And I usually say "give it to me in numbered form". And then you can agree with one, disagree with two, tell it three is this or that. And then after that, you say given all of this, synthesize it."

🚗 Tried to make my first voxel-based game ever with bolt.new It's my first time really using Bolt, you get your regular prompt window on the left side, but any updates to your project are immediately visible on the right side as a browser I think it's much easier for non-tech people because you don't need to switch to your browser to test, and because you skip the whole deployment step, you just click Publish or say publish and it's up as a site My game here is inspired by Teardown, that game that's built up by voxel blocks where you can destroy everything, it's somehow so satisfying to destroy every wall and object But I wanted to do it as a race game, but then I thought why not make it like demolition derby where the goal is to crash into each other? And parts of your car fly off etc. So 🚗 Voxel Derby was born It took a bit to get everything right and you still have to direct it to get what you want, like the engine sound was quite basic and then I told it "okay add gears" and then suddenly it sounded realistic, that kind of stuff But it actually built a performant voxel-based game pretty easily, I'm impressed Tomorrow I'll try add multiplayer just with Bolt, no idea if it can do, it'd have to spin up some server for that but we'll see if it works 😊

Jack Dorsey on becoming a better storyteller: "I found myself very early on thinking about something like thinking about this early idea for Twitter and saying to myself, I could build this awesome. You have those shower-like moments, or you're walking at midnight in some town in New York City, and you've got these amazing brand ideas. And then you start thinking, well, I could really start doing this if only X and if I had this person or if this technology existed or if this happened or this happened. And what I realized was that I was constantly making excuses for not working on it. And then the window had passed, and then I couldn't do anything. So I think it's really, really important to write it out or to draw it out or to code it. But you need to get it out of your head. And the reason you have to get it out of your head is that you need to be able to see it on a surface that is not in your mind. And once you can see it, and once you can step back from it, then you can also decide this passes my filter, my constraints, so maybe I can show it and share it with some other people. And then they will be like that's the stupidest idea ever and or that's somewhat interesting, but maybe this and this and this. So the sooner you can do that, then you have a lot of momentum around it, and you can really decide if you want to commit to it and work on it more or put it on the shelf for a later date. And the realization that I think everyone needs to have about that latter option, putting it on the shelf, is that you can come back to it and it will surface back up in another piece of work or another idea at some point in your life. So having that ability to close off a chapter and move on is really, really important. You can't have all these open threads, and that's what I realized I was doing. And that also encouraged me to really write more and to really think about what's the story? How are people coming to this? And like when I show my friends this, how are they going to react and I would write it down. I would actually treat it like a play. And when I realized that I was writing plays, I read a lot more plays for style and for substance and for technique and I think it's really good. I think there is another company that I have always looked towards for inspiration and I know a number of people in this room probably have a similar company in mind, which is Apple. Apple, I think, is run like a theater company. It has a great sense of pacing, has a great sense of story and has a great sense of execution and it's all about event-driven, it's all stage-driven, the stage being a billboard or the stage being a keynote or the stage being a product launch. All of it has a very, very cohesive end-to-end story. I mean you think about what happened when Steve Jobs came back to the company. The first thing he did was kill every product line the company was working on. And for two years,rs they had no product on the market whatsoever. All they had were a bunch of posters all around the world with Steve Jobs' heroes, and it said, think different. And it was just focused on bringing up the brand and making people aware of the brand again and how the brand is aligning to this particular feeling and story. And then they came out with the iMac and then built iTunes and then the iPod, and they realized that, wait a minute, people are carrying music on their phones now, so we better build a phone, an iPhone. And so this unfolding of the plot and the epic story has been very, very interesting to watch, especially if you look back to that time when he came back to the company. So I've learned a lot from that company and other companies that operate in a similar fashion."

And it works! 😊 I've now been able to make all these DOS games work in their original DOS versions in multiplayer with my own local area network (LAN) emulator: - Quake 1 - Duke Nukem 3D - Doom 1 - Doom 2 If you go to and start a game, you get auto matched with another player if available, and a little LAN is created between you two over the internet and via my server (over Websockets) It works remarkably well if you think about all the steps involved

I have revived Javi Lopez ⛩️'s 28 year old custom map he made and made a web-based Quake 2 with Fable on fast mode 🤓 You can now play it here: 👉 👈 It took a bit of hacking because the textures didn't load the first time, so I repacked some PAK files and now it works! AI is so good at reviving old stuff from your backups, I was always waiting for some backup app to come to finally be able to browse all my old files and figure stuff out from it, and now you can with AI

✨ Made a new mini feature on Photo AI: [ Grab from 3d model ] So the problem is we're at that stage in time (typical for AI) where image-to-3d models are not good enough but are fun to play with, but we know they'll be good enough in 1-2 years With [ Make 3d model ] you already can turn any Photo AI pic into a 3d model but it still looks hyper clunky and deformed, but it works! One cool idea I had to make that more useful and made now: Let people make a 3d model then change the view of the it with the 3d viewer, then press [ o ] and it grabs a frame of the 3d That image you can then [ Remix ] (img2img), and it becomes a real photo again and that in turn you can then turn into a video again with [ Make video ] So that essentially gives you a fully freeform camera position control to take photos with One thing I need to fix is the background/skybox, I kinda need to take the original photo and remove the person and just get the background for the 3d model viewer, in this case it should be white, but it's a start!

✨ 7 years after I set up a Quake III server, I have it running again, but now in the web browser, much easier 😊 👉 👈 Back in 2019 we'd play a fork of Quake III called OpenArena in a Bali villa with Daniel Lockyer Marc Köhlbrugge @dannypostmaa Lenny Dos Santos 🚀 Guilherme Rizzo Andrey Azimov Sean and other ppl But it broke after a new Mac update and they never really fixed it, it kinda sucked because it was actually the only game we could just load with friends online and play death match a bit and then continue your day Luckily Luka built Q3JS which successfully compiles ioquake3 to WebAssembly and now it works in the browser To make it extra simple, I've set up a Q3JS server and frontend for you to use at which loads you straight into the game A big problem is that most of the times, nobody's playing, so I've also added Web Notifications, which notifies you if enough human players join, so you can join a match. And I've added a daily match at 8 PM GMT every day which everyone also gets notified when it starts If you want more servers and maps etc, you can check out Luka's own HAPPY FRAGGING

🐰 i had a schedule last night and i started work a little late today so i woke up early and came here in the morning to work out…i’m not in my senses right now, i’ve been tired all day 🐿️ what did you work out? 🐰 i did chest work outs 🐰 i definitely said “i want to do chest work outs today!” but the protocol team member with me made me start by doing shoulder work outs so i didn’t think much of it and was like “hehe okay shoulders” but then i thought of it again and remembered that i was going to do chest work outs 🐰 i went into the second set and was like “i was supposed to work out my chest” 🐿️ ah it was the second work out? 🐰 yeah 🐿️ you worked out your shoulders a lot then 🐰 right? i’m on a mission right now to work out at least 4 times in a week

(long clip & transcription ‼️) 🎭: if i was asked one year ago if i wanted to perform in Concerto, i would've said no. there was a different kind of event that i was asked if i would like to participate and i actually said no to it. because up until recently like a few months ago, i had extremely bad imposter syndrome. 🎭: i didn't feel like i deserved to stand on stage, i didn't feel like i was ready and i kept doubting myself and was like "there's no way i would be able to perform to people's standards and stuff" so i politely declined being in an event a long time ago. 🎭: this time for Concerto when i was asked to participate, i was thinking of the same thing too but i thought about it a little more. i thought to myself like "if you're not gonna participate now then when are you going to do it? if you keep saying no to all these opportunities, they're all going to slip past." so i keep telling myself, "if you're gonna do it now then when are you going to do it?" 🎭: and i was inspired a little by my recent short covers and dance covers because ive been planning to release them for quite a long time actually. just the thought of that made me think, "i'm trying to work so hard on these other things so why don't i just try to do this as well?" 🎭: so i finally decided that i'm going to try this time to step up on stage and i want to be the proof to everyone that works hard that if you work hard eventually something good will come your way 🎭: i want everyone to be able to look at me and be like, "if he can work hard and do what he wants to do, then i can do it too." i think that's one of the biggest reasons i decided to participate and stand on this stage is because i want to inspire people because i came from nothing 🎭: i had no singing experience, no dancing experience, no japanese experience. when i first joined, i didn't even know how to read hiragana very well. i didn't even know wtf katakana was 🎭: i'm always thankful for the love and support everyone gives me. if it wasn't for you guys, i would really have said no so thank you. i really owe everything to all of you that always around and always supporting #knoxclips thank you for not giving up!!!! 😭🧡
