The term "podcast" was coined by journalist Ben Hammersley in a 2004 article for The Guardian newspaper. In his article, Hammersley was discussing the rapid rise of amateur radio, and he suggested the term "podcasting" as a portmanteau of "iPod" (Apple's popular portable media player at the time) and "broadcasting." This new term quickly caught on to describe the distribution of audio content via the internet for playback on mobile devices and computers. **Did you know?** The first known use of the term "podcasting" was in a blog post by Dannie J. Gregoire in February 2004, where he described the automatic downloading and syncing of audio content to iPods. However, it was Hammersley's article that popularized the term and brought it into wider use. Adam Curry, a former MTV video jockey, played a significant role in the development and popularization of podcasting. Known as the "Podfather," Curry co-created one of the first programs specifically designed for podcasting. In 2004, he collaborated with software developer Dave Winer to develop a program called iPodder, which allowed users to automatically download audio files (podcasts) from RSS feeds to their iPods. Curry's contributions were instrumental in demonstrating the potential of podcasting and in making it accessible to a broader audience. He also started one of the earliest and most influential podcasts, "Daily Source Code," which provided insights into the podcasting process and helped build a community around the new medium. **Historical tidbit:** Adam Curry's "Daily Source Code" podcast was not only one of the first podcasts but also served as a platform for discussing and refining the concept and technology of podcasting, thereby helping to shape the medium in its early days.

I'm of this era when you had to download a podcast to iTunes on desktop and transfer it to the iPod.

Your history is wrong. Former MTV host Adam Curry invented podcasting, he used Mac products to produce and distribute his show in early 2000s. Curry had the first podcast and podcasting directory, Steve Jobs asked Curry for that directory to put it in iTunes. Adam agreed and simply gave it to Jobs. Apple brought it into mainstream.
