In 1980 and thanks to the efforts of Spencer King and Willis Hurst Andreas Gruentzig joined the faculty at @EmoryMedicine as a professor. At Emory he improved the procedure and trained thousands of cardiologists in angioplasty until his untimely death on Oct 27, 1985.

Correct. These were the 1st PTCA balloons. There were no over-the-wire devices. Here's a clip from a film I made with Simon Stertzer in 1980, introducing the 1st generation of balloons in the U.S., made by USCI

As Dr. Geoffrey Hartzler says in this video clip, Andreas #Gruentzig was always thinking about the patient. And #Gruentzig himself addresses these issues in my 1985 interview with him. Remember this was pre-stent, so a serious complication meant emergency CABG. #AngioHistory

The #ECLIPSE trial presented by Ajay Kirtane at #TCT2024 showed that there was no difference between orbital atherectomy and POBA for severely calcified lesions. So I'm posting this clip from my four decades ago 1985 interview with Andreas Gruentzig about "The Ideal Catheter." He says: "For most of our problems at the present time, the balloon catheter is quite a good answer." #AngioHistory

This ER doctor has an incredible story about a little girl that came in as a drowning patient . Her father was particularly distraught as he had had a drowning experience as a child . He was told by his grandparents to not swim in the river behind their home . He did and wound up almost drowning. His grandfather saved his life but lost his own . The little girls father blamed himself for that and was now feeling the same for his daughter . Luckily the daughter pulls through and tells a story that gave me the chills .

It's angioplasty's birthday! #OTD in 1964, using a series of catheters of increasing diameter, Charles Dotter opened a blocked femoral artery w/o surgery. He called it "angioplasty" & made a film to demonstrate it. His radical concept was rejected by US surgeons but embraced by Europeans, ultimately resulting in Gruentzig's balloon which revolutionized the treatment of coronary artery disease. A personal note: today is also my birthday, so I guess I was born to do this!🤣🎈❤️‍🩹#AngioHistory
