Last week, Mayor Brandon Johnson was praising the work of Community Violence Interrupters (CVIs). While venerating CVIs, the mayor said CVIs "put their lives on the line." Johnson is lying through his teeth, and this video perfectly captures exactly what violence interrupters do. In Austin, CPD arrested a man with a gun, which had an extended mag. Extended mags are illegal. The video captures two men, both of whom are wearing colored (green and yellow) vests. Both men are "violence interrupters." This video shows one CVI in the green vest confronting CPD as they arrest a gun offender. The CVI is defending the criminal and arguing with CPD as they carry out their duties. This is typical behavior from CVIs. Though CVIs are supposed to assist police, CVIs routinely harass and obstruct Police as they attempt to remove criminal offenders from the streets. CVIs are also known to tip off gang members and criminals sought by CPD. Worse, CVIs are paid through tens of millions in grant money (tax dollars) to obstruct CPD. CVIs do nothing to improve conditions on the streets. On the contrary, CVIs work to protect criminal offenders who are spreading mayhem in Chicago neighborhoods. Violence prevention programs are a scam, and our tax dollars are paying them to obstruct CPD.

Contrarian has been sharply critical of Community Violence Intervention (CVI) programs because we believe them to be scams. These anti-violence programs are completely fraudulent. These groups receive nearly $100M in grant money (our tax dollars) from the federal, state, county and city governments and they do nothing to reduce violence. In many cases, the "anti-violence workers" deal drugs, drink alcohol, do drugs with gang members or sell weapons to gang members while they are "at work." Our tax dollars are paying ex-gang members to return to gang life under the guise of "peacekeeping." In the video below on the left, an anti-violence worker admits his organization does not cooperate with CPD. The reason these anti-violence street workers refuse to cooperate with Police is because the outreach workers are protecting criminals from prosecution. In the video on the right, Teny Gross of the Institute for Nonviolence Chicago explains how his organization is "on the front lines" addressing street violence. They are not on the front lines. In one instance in April, after a shooting incident outside the Institute for Nonviolence Chicago, CPD officials investigating the incident approached Gross and his associates for assistance. Gross and his colleagues refused to cooperate with CPD and simply walked away. These outreach workers (peacekeepers, violence interrupters or FLIP workers) rarely show up at crime scenes and when they do bother to turn out, they make every effort to thwart police or interfere with CPD investigations. CVIs are a grift.
