Zimbabweans and Malawians are stealing huge quantities of prescription medication, especially ARVs and other drugs from South African public clinics and smuggling them back home on cross-border buses to sell on the black market. This syndicate was dramatically exposed again in the tragic October 2025 Limpopo bus crash that killed 43 people, mostly Zimbabwean and Malawian nationals heading home. Buckets and bags full of undocumented ARVs and prescription meds were found scattered in the wreckage, with no proper medical cargo papers. The team will dig into exactly how these thieves make big money selling the stolen meds on the streets and black markets back in Zimbabwe and Malawi.

A violent suspect is in custody after the VPD Emergency Response Team (ERT) and Marine Unit intercepted a yacht in English Bay. This morning, Vancouver Police received a call for help from a woman who was assaulted on a 40-foot yacht. ERT boarded the VPD’s new boat, the R.G. McBeath V.C., to rescue the victim. The yacht was intercepted while in motion heading towards the Strait of Georgia, where a man was taken into custody. The victim was rescued and treated for her injuries. Firearms were located on the vessel and investigators are seeking a search warrant for the yacht. VPD is seeking charges of assault and forcible confinement against a man. Thanks to the Vancouver Police Foundation for their continued support in helping make these rescues possible. #VPDNews
