Early this morning, CAL FIRE sent 15 fire engines, one Agency Representative, and one mechanic, totaling 53 personnel to Colorado to help support firefighting efforts on the Aspen Acres Fire burning in Custer and Pueblo Counties. These firefighters are expected to assist in Colorado for up to 14 days. This deployment also marks a first for CAL FIRE, as it is the first time we have sent firefighting resources to Colorado through the National Association of State Foresters State-to-State Partnership. We are proud to support our partners and communities beyond California when help is needed.

“At 6:00 this morning the Fire Department was alerted to a report of a fire at 2086 Anthony Avenue. We arrived to find heavy fire in two buildings and very quickly transmitted a 2nd alarm. It eventually became a 3rd alarm, bringing more than 40 fire and EMS units and 150 fire and EMS personnel to the scene. We had fire throughout two buildings, and unfortunately, we did have two fatalities,” said Chief of Department John Esposito. “We did unfortunately have a car parked on the closest fire hydrant. We’ve seen that now a couple of times in the last week throughout the City. We all know that we should not be parking on fire hydrants and when you park on fire hydrants, it slows us down. When we’re fighting a fire, seconds count.” The GNY Red Cross and NYC Emergency Management are on scene to assist displaced residents. FDNY Fire Marshals are investigating the cause and origin of the fire.

These crews are specially trained in the tactical and logistical use of helicopters for fire suppression, serving as a primary initial attack resource, often first on-scene to assess the wildfire. The U.S. Wildland Fire Service Boise Helitack crew is unique in the sense they are the only Interior-firefighting unit that operates a Type 1 helicopter for helitack operations. They respond to wildfires with a full complement of firefighting tools, 660-gallon water dropping bucket, and 12 firefighters on board – more than any other rotor-wing firefighting asset in the country. Their UH-60 Blackhawk helicopter is one of the most safe, effective, and efficient firefighting aircraft in all wildfire response. Like other wildland fire resources, they respond where they are needed most, supporting wildfire operations across the country.

Command of the Hazen Fire has been transferred to AZDFFM this evening on May 2. The fire is burning in salt cedar in the Gila River bottom to the east of State Highway 85, south of W. Hazen Rd. Current size is estimated at 273 acres and is 0% contained. The east side of the fire is holding along power line road with the north end actively burning. Flame lengths as high as 30 feet have been observed. Resources on scene include engines from multiple fire departments and miscellaneous overhead from DFFM. Additional resources have been ordered to include dozers and Type 2 handcrews. Closures: A road closure is in place on Highway 85. Follow Az and check AZ511 for current updates. Please find an alternate route and avoid Highway 85 to allow firefighters to conduct fire suppression efforts. 📍Approximately 2 miles southwest of Buckeye, AZ #AZFire #AZForestry #MaricopaCounty

Just before 12:30 Monday afternoon, the FDNY responded to a 4-alarm fire at 44-49 College Point Boulevard in Queens. Tragically, four people lost their lives in this fire. Two other victims were transported to area hospitals in critical condition. During operations, a stairwell collapsed, trapping two of our members. They were transported to area hospitals in stable condition. More than 230 firefighters and EMS personnel responded. “This is a difficult and tragic day. There were several victims in this fire. The Fire Department did an extraordinary job under difficult circumstances, putting this fire out and saving people. I can't thank them enough for their continued efforts and commitment to life safety,” said Fire Commissioner Lillian Bonsignore. “Upon arrival, we had heavy fire on all three floors of this building. There was a victim trapped on the second floor, which our members removed with a portable ladder. As our engine companies were moving in from the first floor and up the stairs to the second floor, the stairs collapsed, and those two members were trapped in the stairs. With additional help, we were able to extricate those members. As all that is happening, other members are performing CPR on the victims in the street,” said Chief of Fire Operations Kevin Woods. The fire was placed under control just before 2:45 p.m. FDNY Fire Marshals are working to determine the cause of the fire.

A large animal evacuation center has been established at the Earl Warren Showgrounds in Santa Barbara. A public information hotline has been established. Affected residents can call 805-465-6650 for assistance. Evacuation orders remain in place. Residents are encouraged to visit for the most current evacuation information. An evacuation center has been setup at Padre Serra Parrish at 5205 Upland Rd in Camarillo. A community meeting will be held tomorrow in Payson to update the local residents on the fire. It is suspected to be human caused and an investigation continues. SW Area IMT 1 will assume command of the fire. Thanks to the subscriber who shared this breathtaking view of the Horton Fire. 🙏 The fire was mapped at 1,074 acres.
