I want to thank our partners for fulfilling their commitments regarding air defense. We set a goal to double the strength of our air shield, and today marks the beginning of this. I am grateful to Germany for the Patriot system, which is already in Ukraine—this is excellent news. Additionally, I thank the United States for taking another step in strengthening our air defense and our Patriots. We continue to work, and new decisions will surely follow. Ukrainians have already proven that there are no Russian missiles we cannot shoot down. We are doing everything possible to ensure Russian terror is defeated.

Our people continuously suffer from Russian terror. This week alone, Russia has used over 600 guided aerial bombs, more than 60 “Shahed” drones, and nearly 40 missiles of various types. We have significantly strengthened our air defense shield this week, thanks to Germany and the United States. Ukraine’s Patriots will prove their worth even more in countering Russian terror. However, to protect all our cities and villages, and to truly overcome Russian terror, we need more concrete decisions. Next week, we will work with our partners for such decisions – preparations are already underway.

In just a few days between December 29th and now, Russia has used about 300 missiles and over 200 “Shahed” drones against Ukraine. Prior to Ukraine, no country in the world had ever successfully repulsed such combined attacks with the use of drones and missiles, including air-launched ballistic missiles. Only today, 10 Kinzhals were shot down. I am grateful to every warrior in our Air Forces, all fighters in mobile air defense groups, every anti-aircraft gunner, and everyone throughout the world who is assisting Ukraine by providing weapons to defend our skies. Each additional air defense system and missile saves more lives. It is here, in Ukraine, and with our air defense, that we must demonstrate that democracies are capable of protecting lives from all types of terror. If we fail to achieve this task in Ukraine now, Russian terror will further spread throughout Europe and beyond. The Russian leadership's sense of impunity, forged over decades of unrestricted authority, has already resulted in a lot of suffering and loss of life. I thank Chancellor Merz, I thank Germany, and everyone who helps – our agreements have been fulfilled. More Patriots are now in Ukraine and being put into operation. Another 136 drones, used in daily strikes against infrastructure, failed to reach their targets. 🆘 Ukraine desperately needs Patriot missiles to save the lives of its citizens! “We're the ones doing the fighting. The casualties are exclusively Ukrainian. All we need from our partners is for them to do what we agreed on.” — President Zelenskyy The Ministry of Defense of Ukraine has published a statement: “Ukraine is working toward a just peace. Meanwhile, having failed to achieve its objectives on the battlefield, Russia is intensifying its attacks on Ukrainian cities. Last night, the enemy launched one of its largest attacks on Ukraine: nearly 500 attack drones and 77 missiles, including 25 ballistic or hypersonic missiles. Thanks to the professionalism of our defenders and the support of our partners, more than 90% of the cruise missiles and 90% of the Shahed attack drones were intercepted. We thank our air defense forces, who protect Ukraine's skies every day and every night. At the same time, intercepting ballistic missiles remains the key challenge due to a shortage of missiles for Patriot air defense systems. This day brought a very positive result of our international work. Chancellor Olaf Scholz and I agreed today that Germany will provide Ukraine with an additional Patriot system. We are also working with Germany on an additional IRIS-T, another powerful air defense system, as well as missiles for our existing systems. German leadership is tangible, and thanks to it, we will be able to save thousands of lives and provide Ukraine with a stronger defense against Russian terror. We will continue to work with all partners who can help in the same way. This week alone, I met with the presidents of Lithuania, Czechia, Romania, Poland, Hungary, Switzerland, and Latvia. We also concluded a bilateral security agreement with Latvia. This week, I also spoke with the prime ministers of the Netherlands, Greece, Portugal, and Ireland. We have done a lot to transition the Ukrainian Air Force to a new aviation standard – Western combat aviation. From the beginning of this war, we have been talking with our partners about the need to close the Ukrainian sky from Russian missiles and aircraft. We have held hundreds of meetings and negotiations to strengthen the capabilities of our aviation, air defense, and Defense Forces. I had a meeting with representatives of the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Italy, Poland, Canada, and the Netherlands to NATO and praised their countries’ contributions to our defense. We are grateful to Germany for the Patriot systems, to the United States for the opportunity to purchase weapons and air defense systems through the PURL initiative, to the United Kingdom and France for the missiles, to Canada and the Netherlands for their contributions to the PURL initiative, and to all other countries for their assistance. This support truly saves lives of our people, and it is very important that new countries join the initiative. We discussed opportunities to strengthen the protection of our energy system ahead of winter: the purchase of air defense systems and missiles for them, as well as the reinforcement of our tactical aviation. We also discussed the importance of maintaining sanctions against Russia and other key pressure points to compel it to end the war.

Tonight, our air defense warriors destroyed 167 aerial targets used by Russia to attack Ukraine. I thank everyone who defends our skies. In total, there were 183 attack drones and 11 missiles of various types — “Kinzhal,” ballistic, and cruise missiles. The strike mainly targeted the Poltava region, particularly Kremenchuk. And this is just one night. This month alone, Russia has already used around 2,800 attack drones, nearly 3,000 guided aerial bombs, and 140 missiles of various types against Ukraine. Moscow has been doing this for four years now and is constantly increasing the number of strikes. That is why it is so important for all decisions on tightening sanctions against Russia to be made in the coming weeks. We need price caps that will stop this war. We need sanctions against Russian banks and the financial sector that will truly hit hard. We must also combat sanctions evasion schemes. The United States, the European Union, and the G7 countries have the power to make this happen.

Today, during our meeting with Dutch Prime Minister, we focused our discussion on strengthening Ukraine’s air defense, including new air defense systems and the missiles for them. We also talked about F-16s for Ukraine and all the necessary weapons for our defense against the Russian occupiers, including shells for our soldiers, essential equipment, and the protection of our energy infrastructure. I am grateful to the Netherlands for announcing a new assistance package for Ukraine. Today, I presented state awards to our warriors from the Security and Defense Forces and handed the decorations to the families of fallen Heroes who were honored posthumously. I thank everyone who cares for Ukraine, who defends Ukraine, and who does everything they can to ensure that Ukraine exists. This morning, following Russia’s massive attack, I received a report from the commander – the Commander of the Air Force of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, General Kryvonozhko. About what the Russians were targeting and what our air defenders were able to do in response. Among the things that help us significantly make up for the shortage of air defense missiles are the expertise of our military and the courage of Ukrainian men. Our warriors are doing truly heroic things. Many people around the world would be simply unable to do that. Ballistic missiles remain a severe and painful threat, and the only way we can protect against them is with the support of our partners. And we are working with them to make sure Ukraine gets the capabilities it needs. And one of the most convincing arguments is precisely the expertise of our warriors, the ability of Ukrainians to shoot down even the most complex and dangerous Russian missiles. And of course, our biggest argument overall for all international cooperation, for all our international work, is the front. It is our positions, our defense, our combat brigades, and other Ukrainian units that repel Russian assaults and defend Ukraine. Everything depends on how the front holds, on how Ukrainian society supports the front, and on how society feels gratitude toward the front. Thank you to all our warriors. Glory to Ukraine!
