The most interesting thing in tech: Cloudflare has built a new tool that allows publishers to identify, track, and block any AI bots that are scraping their sites without permission. Here Gitesh Gohel and I explain the spreadsheet we've built to decide who to block --- and then we start blocking. It feels like an important moment where the balance of power is shifting back to creators and away from companies who have scraped with impunity and without any fair exchange of value.

Today, I woke up to many messages in my inbox drawing my attention to this talented young Zimbabwean artist called Alta Vybez. He is riding the legendary Hill and Gully riddim, produced by multi-Grammy Award-winning producer Stephen “Di Genius” McGregor, the son of reggae legend Freddie “Big Ship” McGregor. This riddim did not simply appear yesterday. It draws its inspiration from “Hill and Gully Ride,” a traditional Jamaican mento song that has been part of the country’s musical folklore for generations. Di Genius brilliantly blended that old Jamaican folk sound with modern dancehall production, connecting Jamaica’s rich musical heritage with a new generation of artists and listeners. This is international-standard dancehall, and I really, really, really, really enjoyed listening to Alta Vybz! The young man is amazing. His delivery, confidence, timing and command of the riddim show that he can go toe-to-toe with Jamaican artists at this level. This is what happens when Zimbabwean talent refuses to be confined by borders. Alta Vybez did not merely jump onto a popular riddim. He rode it properly and made it his own. Artists will soon have access to 94 affordable homes at 1687 Market Street in San Francisco. Today we broke ground on Artists Hub on Market. In addition to homes for low-income artists, arts workers, arts administrators, entertainment workers, and their families, there will be rehearsal rooms, a black box theatre, and services supporting the arts. Our city is stronger and more vibrant when artists can live in the city where they work. With this groundbreaking, we’re sending a clear message to our arts community: you have a future in San Francisco. Residents will be certified through a new Artist Housing Certification Program run by the Arts Commission, ensuring these homes go to active creative workers. This project is designed to be replicated, so we can build more homes like this across the city, and it is funded thanks to a generous $100 million gift from an anonymous donor and tax-exempt bonds shepherded by the Mayor’s Office of Housing and Community Development. Thank you to Artists Hub on Market and Mercy Housing California for making this project possible and supporting our city’s incredible artists.
