He explains: “What's strange is that it's become this sort of iconic line, and it was all done as a joke. And that was the thing, I played the scene…. And I had a relationship with Luc. And it was really affecting me on set because I would really just worry about crying scenes, and worry and worry and worry. And, I would worry so much that I would almost like worry myself out of tears. I was lucky to be working with him on a film called, uh, The Current War. And I remember asking him like, "How did you do that? Did you draw from your own personal emotion or was it from, you know, is there a technique that you do?" And truth be told, it's a combination of both. But the technique that he told me was this kind of thing that he's able to do with his diaphragm, which is almost like laughing. Matt Damon: You know, I actually once went to meet Sir Ridley Scott to turn down The Martian because... because I had just done that part in Interstellar. And I got so in my head, I said, "Well, I just played a guy stranded on a planet. I can't then go play a guy stranded on a planet." I mean, this is me just classically, stupidly overthinking things. So, I said that out loud to Ridley, and without like missing a beat, he goes, "Oh, no one gives a shit." And I was like, "All right, I'll do it."
