This is a country afraid to deal honestly with mental illness. We treat physical illness as something that deserves care, treatment, and support. Mental illness should be no different. Some people need constant care. Some people need long-term support. And yes, government has a role in helping provide it. The answer is not abandoning people to the streets and then pretending we don’t know why the crisis keeps getting worse.
