New Course: Post-training of LLMs Learn to post-train and customize an LLM in this short course, taught by Banghua Zhu, Assistant Professor at the University of Washington University of Washington, and co-founder of @NexusflowX. Training an LLM to follow instructions or answer questions has two key stages: pre-training and post-training. In pre-training, it learns to predict the next word or token from large amounts of unlabeled text. In post-training, it learns useful behaviors such as following instructions, tool use, and reasoning. Post-training transforms a general-purpose token predictor—trained on trillions of unlabeled text tokens—into an assistant that follows instructions and performs specific tasks. Because it is much cheaper than pre-training, it is practical for many more teams to incorporate post-training methods into their workflows than pre-training. In this course, you’ll learn three common post-training methods—Supervised Fine-Tuning (SFT), Direct Preference Optimization (DPO), and Online Reinforcement Learning (RL)—and how to use each one effectively. With SFT, you train the model on pairs of input and ideal output responses. With DPO, you provide both a preferred (chosen) and a less preferred (rejected) response and train the model to favor the preferred output. With RL, the model generates an output, receives a reward score based on human or automated feedback, and updates the model to improve performance. You’ll learn the basic concepts, common use cases, and principles for curating high-quality data for effective training. Through hands-on labs, you’ll download a pre-trained model from Hugging Face and post-train it using SFT, DPO, and RL to see how each technique shapes model behavior. In detail, you’ll: - Understand what post-training is, when to use it, and how it differs from pre-training. - Build an SFT pipeline to turn a base model into an instruct model. - Explore how DPO reshapes behavior by minimizing contrastive loss—penalizing poor responses and reinforcing preferred ones. - Implement a DPO pipeline to change the identity of a chat assistant. - Learn online RL methods such as Proximal Policy Optimization (PPO) and Group Relative Policy Optimization (GRPO), and how to design reward functions. - Train a model with GRPO to improve its math capabilities using a verifiable reward. Post-training is one of the most rapidly developing areas of LLM training. Whether you’re building a high-accuracy context-specific assistant, fine-tuning a model's tone, or improving task-specific accuracy, this course will give you experience with the most important techniques shaping how LLMs are post-trained today. A dead MIT professor accidentally destroyed the $20 billion executive coaching industry with one hour of lecture, and ten million people have already watched him do it. He filmed it once in January 2018 and died eighteen months later. Executive coaches charge fifteen thousand dollars a session to teach a third of what he covered in that one hour for free. His name was Patrick Winston. He ran the MIT Artificial Intelligence Laboratory from 1972 to 1997 and wrote the AI textbook every computer science major in the world read for thirty years. Every January for four decades, he gave a lecture called "How to Speak." His entire framework fits on a napkin. Do not read. Be in the image. Keep images simple. Eliminate clutter. Start with an empathetic connection. End with a punch line the audience can repeat over dinner. Never open with a joke. Never end with "thank you." That last rule alone has probably cost the executive coaching industry a hundred million dollars. "Your success in life will be determined largely by your ability to speak, your ability to write, and the quality of your ideas. In that order." That is the actual opening line of the lecture. Winston believed it strongly enough to spend fifty years teaching computer scientists how to talk. Founders spend $80,000 on an MBA and then hire a communications coach to teach them the same material Winston filmed once for free. Engineers write brilliant code and lose promotions to teammates who watched this lecture on the train. The lecture is free on MIT OpenCourseWare. The textbook is free on his page. Winston died in 2019. Almost none of the ten million viewers have actually implemented the four rules on the napkin. The napkin is free. The willingness to actually use it in your next meeting is the entire edge.

#breakingnews‌ 🇲🇲Myanmar-based terror module plots a coordinated bomb attack in Indian soil during Manipur's Sangai Festival, warns festival-goers to attend at their own peril, as the terror group seeks to turn the festival into a bloodbath. 📌 As the nation still grapples with the aftermath of the terrorist attack in Delhi, a terror cell operating with impunity from their safe havens across our border, which has a covert & sophisticated network of operatives & sympathizers embedded within Manipur released a video message warning the public to attend the festival at their own peril as it orchestrated a plot to unleash a coordinated bomb & Gun attacks during the festival. 🚨In a video that was released by the terrorist group, the local operatives in Manipur recieves explicit & uncoded instructions from its handler in myanmar to target & execute multiple bomb attacks on the festival grounds. 📍The same terror group had proven its audacity earlier by issuing death threats to Manipur Police following the arrest of 28 Arambai Tenggol cadres. In a brazen display of intimidation, the group had erected a Mexican cartel-style banner rigged with bombs right in the heart of Imphal. They had also defaced the Manipur Police Station signboard & plastered their own insignia & "rising day" propaganda flyers over the police station's gate & right outside the premises of sekmaijin police station in a blunt declaration of war against the authority of the Indian State. 📌 The pattern & message is unmistakable, a foreign-backed terror syndicate deeply embedded within Manipur's underbelly is exploiting local fault lines & local sympathizers to destabilize the nation from within with an aim to bleed India by a Thousand cuts. Its digital propaganda, cross-border coordination & drug-linked financing has revealed a degree of sophistication that demands an uncompromising counter-response from India. 🚨 This is beyond the threshold of insurgency shrouded in secessionist ideology, it is cold-blooded terror sustained by narcotics, fear, intimidation, extortion & foreign complicity. Manipur stands at the frontline once again & the question is no longer whether these forces will strike, but how decisively India will strike back. Tourism Regulator Cancels Work Permit of Taita Hills Resort Manager The government, through the Kenya Tourism Regulatory Authority (TRA), has cancelled the work permit of Sanjeev Kumar, the General Manager at Taita Hills Resort in Taita Taveta County. This action comes after a successful investigation into the reported mistreatment of staff at the resort, which is part of the Salt Lick Taita Hills complex. Kumar has faced numerous allegations of inhumane workplace abuse, discrimination, and mistreatment of staff. The situation had remained largely unreported until an intern came forward with accusations of body shaming. The intern alleged that Kumar repeatedly made demeaning comments about her body size, particularly referencing her large breasts and stated that such features had "no place in the hospitality industry." In response, she reported the abuse to the Human Resource Manager, but instead of addressing the matter, she was transferred to the front desk, where she continued to face verbal abuse. Ultimately, she was dismissed prematurely from her internship. The intern’s complaint to TRA outlined the harmful impact the abuse had on her and how the hostile work environment worsened over time. “On numerous occasions, he made demeaning comments about my body, particularly referencing my large breasts and stating that they had 'no place in the hospitality industry.' These comments humiliated me and created a hostile and discouraging work environment,” she wrote in the complaint. She also noted that she had heard similar stories from others who had worked under Kumar, with some even more distressing. Further allegations came from another former employee who accused Kumar of unprofessional behavior, such as yelling at staff in front of guests. On one occasion, he allegedly came close to throwing a notebook at a staff member. The staff also reported that their off days and leave requests, including maternity and paternity leave, were often ignored. Those who raised concerns about their treatment faced verbal abuse and retaliation. In some instances, employees were reportedly coached on what to say during board visits, with threats of punishment if they deviated from the prepared statements. TRA also received witness accounts from other staff members, one of whom described an incident where Kumar became enraged, breaking a fruit bowl and berating a pastry chef. These acts of aggression were reportedly witnessed by other employees, who said the atmosphere in the workplace had become increasingly toxic. A video shared online further exposed Kumar’s treatment of the staff. It showed a man of Indian descent, identified as Kumar, confronting a male African staffer in what appeared to be a kitchen. During the confrontation, Kumar knocked utensils and food off the counter while angrily shouting at the staff member. The video, which was widely circulated, caused public outrage and led to further scrutiny of Kumar's conduct. In response to the growing concerns, TRA intervened and raised the allegations with the resort's management. The authority demanded a formal response within five days. TRA also warned that failure to address the issues could result in the suspension of the resort's tourism license. This action underscores the regulator’s commitment to ensuring that resorts in Kenya uphold proper workplace standards and treat employees with respect and dignity. The decisionGovernment Cancels Work Permit of abusive Hotel Manager at Taita Hills Resort Sanjeev Kumar terrorising staff at Salt lick Taita Hills . Pity the Indian lady guest who is startled by the phone banging . Poor staff going through terror . Do Kenyans deserve this ? Work permit was cancelled and this man should go back to India The same Sanjeev Kumar terrorizing his Kenyan staff. This man should not even manage a kiosk. The government through the Kenya Tourism Regulatory Authority (TRA) has canceled the work permit of Sanjeev Kumar who is the General Manager at Taita Hills Resort. The authority made the decision after successfully probing the reported mistreatment of staff at Taita Hills Resort and Spa in Taita Taveta County. Mr. Sanjeev Kumar has been accused of inhumane workplace abuse, discrimination, and mistreatment of staff. The staff had for long been silent over the matter until an intern came out to accuse Kumar of abusing her over her body size, by making demeaning remarks and attempting to terminate her internship on that basis. She complained to the Human Resource Manager who played down her concerns but transferred her to the front desk, where she continued to face body shaming and was eventually dismissed prematurely. “On numerous occasions, he made demeaning comments about my body, particularly referencing my large breasts and stating that they had "no place in the hospitality industry." These comments not only humiliated me but also created a hostile and discouraging work environment,” reads a complaint to TRA “I have also heard similar accounts from others who have worked under him, some of which are even more distressing.” The authority says another former employee has complained that Kumar “yelled” at staff in front of guests and “nearly threw a notebook at them”. Additionally, the staff claim off days and leave requests, including maternity and paternity leave, are disregarded and those who raised concerns were met with “verbal abuse and retaliation”. “Employees were reportedly coached on what to say during board visits and threatened with consequences if they deviated from prepared statements,” the tourism regulator says. The regulator also received witness accounts about Kumar angrily breaking a fruit bowl and berating a pastry chef. A video footage shared online showed a man of Indian descent confronting a male African staffer before three other staff in what seems to be a kitchen. The Indian man severally knocks utensils and food off the counter to the floor while at it. TRA says it has raised the allegations with the resort’s management and demanded a response within five days. The authority has threatened suspension of the resort’s tourism license if the allegations are not addressed. to cancel Kumar’s work permit is part of the broader effort to address the issue of abusive management practices within the Kenyan tourism industry. TRA has made it clear that abusive behavior in the workplace will not be tolerated, especially in the hospitality industry, which is heavily reliant on the well-being of its staff. The cancellation of Kumar’s work permit sends a strong message that foreign managers or employees who mistreat Kenyan workers will face serious consequences. Kumar’s actions have sparked outrage not only within the resort’s staff but also among members of the public, who have called for stronger measures to protect workers from abuse. The incident has also shed light on the vulnerability of employees in the hospitality industry, many of whom have to endure mistreatment out of fear of losing their jobs. With TRA taking decisive action, the hope is that this will encourage other employers to treat their staff fairly and uphold the integrity of Kenya’s hospitality sector.
