Y'all see this swirl over the Mediterranean passing south of Benghazi? That's not a hurricane – it's a Medicane. Yes, that's a real term. The word is a portmanteau combining "Mediterranean" and "hurricane." The Mediterranean is too small to support barotropic (tropical cyclones) the scale of conventional hurricanes AND is too far north to support a truly tropical cyclone anyway. Moreover, water temperatures are too cool. (Most tropical cyclones exist over sea surface temperatures of 78 degrees or warmer; the current water temperature off the coast of Libya is about 63 degrees.) Medicanes can and occasionally do reach hurricane strength. The strongest on record was Medicane Ianos, which impacted Greece between September 17-18, 2020. It briefly became the equivalent of a tiny Category 2 hurricane with winds of 95 mph. On rare occasions, a nontropical low can meander over the Mediterranean, and a storm can form that takes on some tropical characteristics. Unlike nontropical cyclones, which are common at the mid-latitudes, medicanes feature a warm core. That requires warm sea surface temperatures. A 2016 study found that medicanes are likely to become significantly stronger by the end of the century in response to warming sea surface temperatures. Tthe researchers found a likelihood for "a higher number of moderate and violent medicanes.” Since 1980, Mediterranean sea surface temperatures have increased between 1 and 2 degrees.

The ongoing record-breaking heat wave in the West will continue while expanding across the Central U.S. through the weekend. Based on preliminary data, there have been around 50 March high temperature records broken since March 17 and more than 150 daily high temperature records broken. Record setting temperatures are expected to continue over the next several days. Most areas will see temperature departures of 25 to 35 degrees higher than normal for this time of year. However, some locations in the central Plains on Saturday could see departures exceed 40 degrees from normal! Overnight low temperatures will also be well above average, providing little relief from the heat. The early time of year, prolonged nature of this heat wave, and limited seasonal acclimation will increase the risk of heat impacts especially among sensitive populations or those without effective cooling. The latest release of the Annual National Land Cover Database (NLCD) extends annual mapping through 2025, providing a longer view of how landscapes across the United States have changed over time. One example is the Great Salt Lake in Utah. In the mid-1980s, the lake’s water levels reached historic highs. Since then, water levels have fluctuated over the years but have declined overall. Built from Landsat imagery, Annual NLCD maps land cover across the United States each year, helping researchers, government agencies, businesses, and communities better understand how landscapes are changing. After seeding, the hurricane took an immediate sharp turn towards the southeast US. They did this 80 years ago... Did you also know there was another program called Project Stormfury from 1962-1983 that seeded hurricanes to a substantially higher degree to "learn whether the force of the storms can be diminished"? It's completely rational to think that they also learned more about how they can impact their trajectory towards landmass and increase it's destructive power. What if the government is just creating a human trauma farm and disaster economy so they can continue to make you more and more reliant on them and profit from it at the time? If still you're struggling to comprehend that kind of malice from these orgs, you must have been dead asleep for the past 4 years. Goose bumps to see these tiny baby turtles making their first voyage into the sea from our Forest Department Olive ridley turtle hatchery at the Besant Nagar Beach in Chennai. To realise that these turtle species date back to the time of the dinosaurs,over 200 million years ago is startling. So many incredible facts about these brave babies that will leave you speecless.Hatchlings use a temporary "egg tooth" or carbuncle to break open the shell. Eggs usually hatch in 45-60 days and babies emerge digging through the sand when their head comes out first.They also have a yolk sac on their belly to provide nutrients for them to swim and travel when released back into the sea.
