When I think of MicroProse, I think of Sid Meier. When I think of their games, the list usually starts with Civilization (my all-time favorite), but a very close second is Railroad Tycoon (1990). You manage a railroad company, buy trains, set schedules, connect towns, build infrastructure, and watch your railway network (and empire) grow. The attention to historical detail only later caught my eye. The steam engine trains of the early era, the electrical trains that came later, the wonderful pixel-style graphics, and the game's pace all blended into a beautiful game. Last but not least, the era-typical massive manual with a crapload of information and historical data. The end of fiscal year rating was pretty funny, with the different "titles" that were bestowed on you - from Hobo to President of the United States - depending on how well you performed. MicroProse was a real powerhouse in the 80s and 90s, and Railroad Tycoon was one of the many reasons why.

It was incredibly fun, and with support for up to four players, it was one of the best games to enjoy with friends. But did you know this? Mortal Kombat Shaolin Monks is known for being one of the greatest adventure games of all time, but what a lot of people missed was its unique PvP mode. This game gave you the ability to get very creative with combos and there was nobody better at showcasing this than CHECK. These short clips demonstrate the many different ways you can build your combos and how you can use the stages to alter your combo routes. This was just a fun game mode that was never taken seriously by players, but it is cool to see how much detail went into it and how much the systems inside it allowed you to express yourself. If we get a 3D Kollection, including this game is an absolute must. This game is what you would refer to as "lightning in a bottle".

Any fans of Sim Ant who played this wonderful game back in the day? Maxis created so many of these "Sim" games, starting - of course - with Sim City, so when Sim Ant was published in 1991, I was pretty intrigued. Not sure if you were one of those who had an "ant farm" back in the 80s, but I did. Playing this one for the first time was pure chaos, I had basically no clue what to do (I usually read the manual after several attempts with any new game I had). You take on the role of an ant in a colony of black ants. The goal is to survive, grow and eventually conquer the whole garden against red ants and other bugs... and then spread and take over the house to drive the family nuts, with the ultimate goal of them having to sell the house. Savage, lol! It felt like a pretty experimental game in some sense, open ended, requiring a lot of trial and error, patience and practice. Highly rewarding if you were willing to put in the time.

All you had to do was beat your rival, but they would chase you so closely that the tension was incredible. When you win a race, you can use the prize money to upgrade your car, and with the variety of tracks, it never gets boring. I also have great memories of sitting with my friends, three of us sharing one keyboard and playing together. 😆

If I had to choose just one game (and no other ever again) to play for the rest of my life, I'd go with Civilization (MicroProse, 1991). You can argue some sequels were better (I can't deny that), but the "wow" effect from first playing it in 1991 was so huge it holds a special place in my heart. For a 1991 game, the graphics are pretty good, the sound fits perfectly (rather soothing!), gameplay is complex and variable, and replay value is gigantic. To me, Civilization is as close to perfection as a game can be. That's my pick. What's yours?

One of those is The Last Ninja, developed by System 3 and published in 1987. I was simply blown away by the graphics (isometric on the C64 with such an amazing level of detail - simply gorgeous) and mesmerized by the kickass sound. What Ben Daglish and Anthony Lees conjured up musically will forever be part of gaming history - an absolute iconic masterpiece. The game itself was pretty straightforward: a mix of action-adventure and a bit of puzzle-solving, nothing groundbreaking. But that didn’t matter, because very few games made you feel so immersed the way The Last Ninja did. Though a single-player game, it was often our choice when my friends and I met up after school to play, taking turns and seeing how far we could get together as a team. Not what anyone would have expected from Sierra at the time, since they were so heavily invested (and dominant) in the adventure game genre. But it was a smart move, because this game really was, well... incredible. You are presented with an area containing some fixed objects already in place, plus a limited inventory of parts (ropes, pulleys, bowling balls, balloons, gears, candles, mice, cats, fans, guns, blimps, and many more). Your job is to place, rotate, and connect these parts so they interact in a precise sequence of events to complete the level. There is no order or fixed way, you decide how and where. The goal could be as simple as "pop the balloon" or "put the ball in the basket" - but there were countless ways to do it. Rarely has a game made you think so much, often outside the box, yet never feel like a chore. It was pure fun and joy to figure out, and the multiple solutions made it even better, and also increasing replay value. Some games from the 80s and 90s really tested your brain. Not just mindless shooting or running, but connecting the dots, understanding abstract principles, and learning while playing. The Oregon Trail was one, as was Where in the World Is Carmen Sandiego?, and this one certainly belongs in that group too. A rare gem, loved it.

Westwood was such an amazing game studio. One of their timeless classics is Eye of the Beholder 2, which was released in 1991. The intro alone gave me nerd chills - anyone who ever played Dungeons & Dragons would remember Khelben Blackstaff, and if he considers you his friend, what an honour! The game itself is your typical dungeon crawler. I don't mean that in a disrespectful way but appreciating it for what it was and is, a great game of its genre. Excellent graphics (I am such a sucker for that 90s pixel style), good sound effects and music, and an easy to use interface, making the real-time fights fast paced but manageable. Among the greats of Bard's Tale, Might and Magic, Ultima, and Wizardry, the likes of Eye of the Beholder or Lands of Lore were probably a tier below, but I always loved coming back to them. To me, this game is emblematic of the early 90s, and for that I love it.
