A modern wind turbine looks deceptively simple from the outside. The largest onshore turbines now use blades stretching beyond 80 metres, sweeping more than 20,000 m² of air. Yet the entire structure rotates at only around 10-20 RPM. Actually, inside the nacelle is a precision gearbox that transforms this slow, high-torque rotation into the 1,000-1,800 RPM required by the generator. This gearbox is one of the most demanding mechanical systems in renewable energy. It continuously transmits megawatts of power, while surviving changing wind loads, vibration and billions of fatigue cycles over a 20-25 year lifespan. Inside are planetary gear stages, precision-ground alloy steel gears, advanced bearings, lubrication systems and cooling circuits. Some of the largest geared turbines contain close to 1000+ liters of specialised synthetic oil to manage lubrication and heat during continuous operation. A single large onshore turbine can cost around $4-5 million, with complete projects costing significantly more after foundations, roads, electrical systems and installation. The goal is for the machine to recover its capital cost within roughly 5-10 years, then continue producing electricity for decades. This is why reliability is the biggest challenge. Gearboxes, bearings, generators and electrical systems remain critical failure points, pushing engineers toward better materials, sensors and predictive maintenance. The scale of this industry is enormous. China has become the world’s largest wind turbine manufacturing and exporting hub, with several Chinese companies among the largest turbine suppliers globally. Building a wind turbine is not just about capturing wind in an efficient manner, It is about creating a machine that can convert wind energy into electricity for millions of hours with minimal human intervention and sustain millions of load cycles.

The Department of the Environment didn’t answer the question so I will. And I quote: “Bisphenol A is a highly toxic synthetic organic compound used in the epoxy resins of turbine blades. Epoxy resins contain 30-40 per cent bisphenol A and turbine blades are the largest global consumer of epoxy resins. The annual global production of bisphenol A is about 2 billion kilograms and is increasing because the spearing of the environment with wind turbines is today’s fad. Bisphenol A is an endocrine disrupter that has been linked to about 80 diseases including cancers and reproductive disorders. It is lethal for young children. In 2012, the World Health Organisation warned about the potentially carcinogenic properties of endocrine disrupters and concluded that they pose a global threat to public health. The European Food Safety Authority has massively reduced by 1,000 times the dietary intake of bisphenol A to one hundred millionth of a gram per kilogram of body weight per day. All this is public record information which the wind industry must know. The leading edges of turbine blades shed fine dust and blade edges only have a 5-year guarantee. Each blade sheds a minimum of 0.2 to 2.5 grams of bisphenol A in dust per year. This dust is spread wide and far by wind. If one gram of bisphenol A gets into dam waters, 10 million litres of water are rendered unusable. Over the life of a turbine, this equates to pollution of half a trillion litres of water per turbine. This is real pollution, not the alleged pollution of carbon dioxide, the gas of life. This dust from eroding blades has covered large areas of our planet and bisphenol A is leaching into soils and waterways. This is a toxic time-bomb.” Quote from: #auspol

China completes installation of world's largest single-unit floating offshore wind turbine The world's largest single-unit 16-megawatt floating offshore wind turbine "Three Gorges Pilot" was installed on Saturday in waters off Yangjiang, south China's Guangdong Province. The 16-megawatt floating offshore wind turbine consists of three parts, namely a 16 mw ultra-large capacity wind turbine, a semi-submersible floating platform, and a new mooring system. With a maximum tip height exceeding 270 meters, the wind turbine rotor has a diameter of 252 meters, with a swept area equivalent to seven standard football fields. Unlike traditional fixed-bottom turbines that are physically connected to the seabed, it is installed on a semi-submersible floating platform measuring 80.82 meters long, 91 meters wide, and with a displacement of 24,100 tons. The platform is secured through nine suction anchors, combined with domestically produced high-performance polyester fiber cables and anchor chains for seabed mooring and positioning. "To deal with the harsh sea conditions, our team has developed and applied a new mooring system, a dynamic monitoring system, an active ballast system, and 66 kV dynamic submarine cables for the first time in China," said Pan Hongguan, an offshore wind power engineer from Guangdong Branch of China Three Gorges Corporation (CTG). According to Pan, the new mooring system combines polyester cable and anchor chain, which is like adding a "spring" to the middle of the system, to deliver superior mechanical performance. The "Three Gorges Pilot" wind turbine previously completed its integrated assembly at Tieshan Port in Beihai of south China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. It arrived at its target sea area located more than 70 kilometers off the coast of Yangjiang after a long-distance towed voyage across the Qiongzhou Strait which connects South China's island province of Hainan with Guangdong Province on the mainland. After being put into operation, the wind turbine is expected to generate approximately 44.65 million kilowatt-hours of clean energy annually, enough to meet the annual electricity demand of 24,000 households.

“Work has been suspended at a major wind farm project south west of Warwick after storms snapped a wind turbine blade. McIntrye Wind Farm recently connected some of its turbines to the grid, those works are on hold as it investigates the incident.” “The 458MW Coopers Gap wind farm in south west Queensland, the newest and biggest wind project built to date in Australia – is to undergo major repairs after faults were found in its commissioning process. AGL, which operates the $850 million project and is a joint owner through the Powering Australia Renewables Fund, said in a statement that the blades of one of the 123 turbines will have to be replaced entirely, while GE Catcon is also going to replace “generators” – referring to the equipment in the nacelle at the top of the wind tower – in a further 50 turbines.” •••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• Not only are wind farms unreliable in terms of wind dependent generation. They break easily as we saw last week on the Darling Downs. If the blades on a wind farm can’t survive a summer storm on the Darling Downs they will be useless. This is just another example of wind farms being unreliable. A few years ago wind farm had to replace 50 out of 123 turbines just after it was commissioned. Australia cannot not afford to be pursuing Net Zero policies being pushed by the two major parties. We should focus on using our coal, uranium and gas resources instead of imported materials.
