It’s not a tax on countries like China; it’s a tax on the stuff we buy. Here’s how it works: when the government puts a tariff on something, it raises the price of that product. The idea is to make imported goods more expensive so people buy American-made products instead. Sounds good, right? The problem is, most things we use in the U.S. are made overseas, and it would take years—or even decades—to make them here. And in some cases, it might never happen because it costs too much to produce those goods locally. For example, if something costs $50 and a tariff adds $5, the new price is $55. In 2018, the US placed tariffs on imported washing machines to protect American manufacturers. 1,800 new jobs were created at a cost of $1.5 billion a year to consumers, roughly $820,000 per job. And the tariffs even drove up the price of dryers that weren’t taxed at all. Wealth was not created, tariffs moved money from millions of households to a small protected industry while making the whole economy smaller. David Ricardo explained in 1817 that even if one country could make every single product better and cheaper than anyone else, it would still get richer by trading with worse producers because what matters is who gives up the least by making it instead of something else.
