Young care leavers in England are dying at a much higher rate than other people their age due to isolation and a severe drop off in support from social services once they turn 18. That’s the conclusion of a government-commissioned review, which called it a ‘national tragedy.’ The estimated death rate among care leavers aged between 18 and 14 is about three to four times higher than that in the general population for this age group.

Today I questioned the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care on palliative care following a recent report which shows that care is in crisis. Whatever your view on the Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill. I hope everyone agrees it should be safe. I’m concerned he couldn’t guarantee the bills safety or that people wouldn’t be compelled to take the decision to have an early death due to a lack of palliative care provision.

“Very disappointed,” Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders told CBS News’ Caitlin Huey-Burns in reaction to recent negotiations for a deal to end the government shutdown. He argued that extending Affordable Care Act tax credits for a year was a modest proposal. “Nobody wants to see a shutdown, but I think what Tuesday was about, what the polling is about, is people are holding this White House accountable,” Sanders said. In exchange for the eight Democratic votes, Republicans agreed to hold a vote by mid-December on extending health care tax credits that have been central to Democrats' demands. The agreement angered many in the Democratic base, who wanted health care addressed in the deal itself.
