In 2008, President ED Mnangagwa, then ZANU-PF’s chief election agent who ran Robert Mugabe’s presidential campaign, orchestrated the party's response and political manoeuvres after Mugabe lost the initial round of voting to Morgan Tsvangirai. He is on record acknowledging that in 2008, “hatina kuwana majority yekuti titonge,” and he says all ZANU-PF officials deserted the election and took to their heels. He was the one who later manipulated the election to make sure RGM retained power. We then saw President Thabo Mbeki step in to facilitate negotiations. That was the real election stolen from the opposition with full V11, RGM is on record saying MRT got 73%, everything that followed is hearsay. If the opposition had been serious, they would have demanded the presidency in 2008. Instead, they proceeded to a GNU as subordinates. We subsequently participated in the 2013 elections, took part in the 2017 coup, and even attended the inauguration, despite Patrick Chinamasa having already declared, “Chinhu chedu”. We went on to participate in both the 2018 and 2023 elections. Why, then, do people claim they did not support Geza simply because he was ZANU-PF? Was the GNU not ZANU-PF? Furthermore, how many people died in the 2008 elections? What did the opposition do for the people who died in 2008 during the GNU? What policies did they push to protect the citizens? If the opposition truly values human life, why did they get into bed with ZANU-PF several times? Why did they partake in the coup? GEZA was part of ZANU-PF leaders who sponsored the coup heavily. Was Geza a different kind of ZANU? It is all political gymnastics 🤸🏿 nothing serious or factual. It is just ducking for survival and kuitiswa) 24/7!

Zanu PF would field him as its council candidate for the February 21, 2026, Ward 1 by-election in Chegutu. But two days before the election, Konjana left home saying he was going to his election command centre. He never arrived, and he went on to win in absentia. His family declared him missing. Unexpectedly, today, an unsigned statement was circulated alongside a video of him in a moving vehicle in which Konjana declares that he is alive but will not be taking up his council seat. The statement strongly hints at being kidnapped. He refers to “an ordeal” and being in “darkness, isolated and facing the unknown” and a “final escape.” There were “several attempts on my life and limb,” he writes, crediting his survival on people’s prayers.

The MDC-T went to congress in 2014 and elected Thokozani Khupe as its Vice President. Following his cancer diagnosis, Morgan Tsvangirai was approached by General Engelbert Rugeje, who advised him that his party was too important an institution to be left in the hands of Thokozani Khupe in the event that he did not win his battle with cancer. He then unconstitutionally appointed two Vice Presidents, Nelson Chamisa and Elias Mudzuri, on 15 July 2016. Advocate Eric Matinenga, who was the MDC-T Constitutional Affairs Minister during the GNU and is still one of Zimbabwe’s top lawyers, wrote an advisory paper to Tsvangirai, stating that the appointments were against the party’s constitution, which clearly said the Vice President must be elected at congress, not appointed by the President. The appointments stood until Morgan Tsvangirai’s death in February 2018. According to the MDC-T’s own constitution, the person to take over was supposed to be Khupe. However, Chamisa and the top six did what they did, and Chamisa took over. Mwonzora became a creation of that 2016 unconstitutional appointment by Tsvangirai, after Khupe took the matter to court and won and but then lost to Mwonzora at their congress. As I said in my previous tweet, ZANUPF owes us nothing. It is our duty not to create avenues for ZANUPF to manipulate. ZANUPF exploited these divisions, as is often the case in politics, but did not create them. The MDC-T’s internal legal and constitutional issues opened the door for ZANUPF! It is also important to note that many of us warned of the dangers of these appointments, but the cultic following Tsvangirai enjoyed was often abused—at times even through violence—to silence anyone within the party who objected. Even ZANUPF, with all its power, actually amends its constitution when it wants to make changes like those introduced by Tsvangirai. Mnangagwa amended the constitution to remove the running mate clause to deal with his “Chiwenga problem”, and Mugabe amended the ZANUPF constitution when removing Joice Mujuru and appointing Mnangagwa in her place.
