Training to get drafted Day 3: One of the biggest things I’ve been working on lately is my pelvis rotation. I’ve talked about this in the past—how my pelvis wasn’t fully clearing and fully firing. For a long time, I thought the issue was that I just needed to rotate harder. What I started to realize, was that the real problem wasn’t my pelvis at all—it was my foot. Because my foot wasn’t firing, my hip wouldn’t fire correctly, and my knee would try to take over. My cue used to be, “Alright, slam the knee down to rotate the pelvis.” But what was actually happening was my foot would get stuck. It wouldn’t clear. It wouldn’t fire. When I started looking back at video from times when I threw harder, the difference became obvious. My entire foot had cleared and fired. That’s why one of the biggest things I’m working on right now is getting my foot through and fully rotated—firing the foot. Because if I’m able to fire my foot, and you actually feel this, you physically can’t keep your pelvis closed when your foot is in that position. Everything opens. One of my favorite cues for this is “get to my shoelaces.” This is something I got from Albertus, my partner. During the drive phase, all I’m thinking about is getting to my shoelaces. If I can get my foot into that position— I know my pelvis will clear. And if my pelvis clears, I’m going to create elite pelvis rotation. That’s one of my mechanical focuses right now. The difference in the way Drew threw in HS/college and what we saw in the videos from the Steelers rookie camp is extremely subtle (basically a slight adjustment w/ the front leg and zero change to his upper half or arm path/slot) and most wouldn’t be able to pick up on it. I disagree that he was early with his external rotation during college. The video below (from 2024) shows his typical approach over the past 7 years…staying loaded and coiled on the back leg until the front foot makes contact with the ground. The drill is designed to keep him loaded in his back glute, and maintain the discipline to not fire his hips early, until his front foot gets down. His front foot and hip slightly clear (while staying coiled in the core) to allow the hips to come through cleanly. That slight opening of the front hip, along with the slight closure-internal rotation-of the front shoulder is how hip-shoulder separation is created. Getting the hips to come through first (while the shoulders and arms stay back), then the torso, then the shoulders, is how hip-shoulder separation (power) is maximized. Learned that from Chris Hess and it’s been a fantastic tool.

Hip rotation is one of the primary drivers of velocity during the throw. Both speed and timing of rotation matter. The goal is to have the hips rotate out in front of the torso. Ideally, you want rotation to begin quickly after the front foot strikes the ground. The speed of rotation is also critical. I strive for all QBs that I work with to be 800+ deg/sec with hip rotation speed. One key thing is to not mistake “sliding” for rotating. Many will push and slide their hips forward as opposed to rotating against a stable lead leg.

How to Create Rotation With the Back Leg How you want to actually create rotation with the back leg. For me and higher level guys, I don’t even like to think about rotation. If you feel your hips rotating, it’s probably too slow. This is such a violent, explosive movement that happens in milliseconds. You shouldn’t even be able to feel it. That’s why I think about it as a weight shift. When you’re putting force into the ground, into that X direction, most of your weight is on the back leg. Then once you create that impulse and it propels you forward, all you need to think about is getting to the front leg. That force naturally rotates the hips into foot plant. For a lot of higher level guys, this helps a lot. They don’t have to think about rotating the hips. Because that can actually mess things up. Instead, it’s just force into the ground and get to the front leg. The pelvis will rotate on its own.

I went from 92 to 98 miles an hour by adjusting my drop. When I used to think about the drop phase in my delivery, I thought I needed to drop as hard as I could into my back leg. So that’s what I did. I dropped in, got into a squat position, and powered myself out of it. That got me to the low to mid nineties. What got me to 96, 97, and 98 was learning to create linear momentum during the drop. I started moving down the mound instead of just dropping straight down. One of the biggest things that helped was dropping into the inside of my back foot. Before, I would drop into the sole of my back foot. That put me in a very vertical shin angle and I’d go straight down. Then I had to push out of it. The simple adjustment I made was dropping into the inside of my back foot. That put me in a position where my shin wasn’t as vertical. It created a force vector that helped me get down the mound and build linear momentum instead of just going straight down. That linear momentum wasn’t powered by me. It was powered by gravity. I was able to use gravity to my advantage and throw harder with less effort.

80% of pitching velocity comes from rotation. The biggest mistake I see is guys trying to rotate by pushing hard down the mound. They try to push to create as much linear momentum as possible. That’s actually the wrong way to approach it. When you push, it becomes much harder to rotate effectively. Rotation is where most of your pitching velocity comes from. Hip to shoulder separation is responsible for about 80 percent of your velocity. If you take away from that separation, you’re taking away from your velocity. That’s why even from your knees you should be able to throw about 80 percent of your top velocity. What we want to do is maximize rotation and create as much separation as possible. Your pelvis fires toward the target while the ribcage, shoulders, and pec stay back. That stretch creates torque through your torso. That torque is what propels the arm through the throw. Rome: I don't like this feeling. It's very annoying. This game is very tricky. Because on one hand, you want to be in charge, and powerful, and strong. And then a 5-foot-2 brown-haired singer walks into your life, and makes you all emotional and sensitive. A common hitting flaw that is rarely corrected and can exposes certain hitters at higher levels, is “leaking” … the player’s front side is “running away” from contact prematurely. Sometimes also called “spinning off” the ball. This means energy is escaping the swing because of a chain of events that usually begins with the incorrect action of the stride foot. Correctly engaging the stride foot into the ground, called “foot-plant,” allows the body to efficiently sequence. As a result, the swing is shorter and barrel stays in the hitting zone longer. The BIG key is we have to be able to ***control our front knee*** before starting to swing. If a hitter can control their front knee and their front side a hair longer, stay behind contact, and attack the inside of the ball, it creates more whip.…(bat speed) and improves plate coverage. You might need to watch the video a couple times, because there are various ways to stride that allow the hitter to control their front knee. It is not a one size fits all action. And hitters who have sick power and want to pull the ball intentionally might actually “leak and clear” on purpose. OK! Here's the best angle for the Grayson Allen gather & step thru. We're looking to see if he got the left foot down at same time/after he gathers with both hands. It's as close as humanly possible - hence, no way to detect with human eye in real time, benefit goes to the player. So next foot to touch becomes the pivot (in the NBA). Does he then move the right foot? YES - about 2.3 inches, which again, is difficult to detect in real time but it's there. Remember: refs need to be #certain on travel calls (unfair to use slow mo close up to judge but here we are). Without that slight move, perfectly legal move to lift the pivot foot in order to shoot or pass before it comes back down. 👌🏀

Lower body mechanics to throw 95 mph. There are four things about the lower body that I wish I knew when I was a 16 year old throwing 78 miles an hour and trying to throw 90 miles an hour and beyond. The first is the leg lift and how well you're able to start creating momentum toward the target. One of the biggest mistakes people make is thinking they need to fall forward as soon as they lift their leg to create drift. What worked for me was coming to a balance point first and then starting to shift my weight from there. That's still a form of drift, and you see a lot of Japanese pitchers do this, like Yoshinobu Yamamoto. The second component is the back leg and how it creates linear momentum toward the target. One of the biggest mistakes I made was diving too much into the quad. I'd get onto my toes and sink into my quad, which led to less power and actually made rotating much harder. Another mistake I made was squatting as deep as possible into the back leg, almost like a pistol squat. What actually helped me was simply dropping down as quickly as possible. I let gravity pull me down. If you've created enough drift, even just a slight drift, that drop will create linear momentum down the mound. The third component is getting the pelvis to rotate into foot plant. The biggest thing here is matching your pelvis plane of rotation and making sure the pelvis rotates down into foot plant rather than rotating upward. One of my favorite cues for this is to slam the knee down or get onto your shoelaces. The last component is simple. It's the lead leg block. Why is the "pregnancy after 40" trend being glamorized? Children are a blessing whether you're 25 or 45. But we can't sell women the idea that you can party through your twenties, chase your career through your thirties, then choose to settle down and be just as likely to get married, have children, and be a trad wife at 45 as if you had done it at 25. I don't have a problem with women getting pregnant later in life. I have a problem with presenting that as if it is the ideal. The biological clock is real. God can absolutely do anything, but we shouldn't confuse what's possible with what's probable. Young women, if you want marriage and children, let your choices reflect that. Don't assume you'll always have another decade. As far as it depends on you, get married as soon as you can.

But we can't sell women the idea that you can party through your twenties, chase your career through your thirties, then choose to settle down and be just as likely to get married, have children, and be a trad wife at 45 as if you had done it at 25. I don't have a problem with women getting pregnant later in life. I have a problem with presenting that as if it is the ideal. The biological clock is real. God can absolutely do anything, but we shouldn't confuse what's possible with what's probable. Young women, if you want marriage and children, let your choices reflect that. Don't assume you'll always have another decade. As far as it depends on you, get married as soon as you can.
