One reason events like this deserve attention beyond the immediate disaster: glacier retreat can destabilize entire mountain systems in ways that are difficult to predict. In Greenland, a collapsing mountainside triggered a 200-meter tsunami — then trapped water kept oscillating inside the fjord for nine days, generating a seismic signal detected around the world. Different disaster, but a striking example of how ice loss can set off cascading geological effects:
