For adding a single line with a period, reading from cat(1) is slightly shorter (10 chars) $ ed⏎ r !cat⏎ .⏎ ^D vs the 13 chars for $ ed⏎ a⏎ ..⏎ .⏎ s/.//⏎ In some you can reduce that to 11 chars $ ed⏎ a⏎ ..⏎ .⏎ s/.⏎ but GNU ed 1.14 broke this.
