The assault... was also on memory itself. Languages were suppressed. Knowledge gained through millennia of civilization, including in the Mayan codices, was deliberately put to the flame. Many traditions rooted in land and community and memory were lost." "These are living traditions carrying a wisdom that can help the region shape technological change in its own image towards its own vision of a good life, to pursue development on its own terms. And that starts with ensuring the people of this region can see themselves in the technology. More than 800 indigenous peoples live here, representing 60 million people. Many of their languages and systems of knowledge are sustained through oral traditions when AI systems are trained largely on written material that has been gathered elsewhere. That knowledge can be distorted or made invisible. Right now, Chile's National Center for Artificial Intelligence and 30 partner institutions are developing a LatAm GPT, an open-source model trained on regional data. Its first version is in Spanish and Portuguese, but researchers are also developing tools for other languages -- with the consent of the indigenous communities concerned. LINGUISTIC IMPERIALISM Linguistic imperialism is the process whereby dominant powers impose their language on those they colonise, suppressing indigenous languages and thus marginalising their speakers and sustaining power inequalities. Indigenous languages in colonial Africa were frowned upon, while colonial languages were made mandatory. In Anglophone Africa, policies were all written in English; media and broadcasting used English; and there were many systemic policies forbidding the use of indigenous languages. Summary of Dr Thandi Dodo Sidzumo-Mazibuko interview (1986) 1. Any forms and levels of material aid from foreign donors must be limited to what African people themselves have requested. 2. Aid terms and conditions must comme from the people. Communities must determine their most pressing needs and only then can well meaning aid givers come to the party. 3. Most agencies are interested in getting quick results while overlooking the human element in development projects. When you work with human beings you cannot operate in technical and systematic cold fashion. 4. We must look into who creates hunger and who sustains that hunger, the national and International forces with a negative impact on different communities. 5. Assistance must be given on our own terms, we must determine that kind of help we need. 6. Before participating in a community development project, we must first understand that community's perceptions of its needs. 7. On the basis of the community's description of its needs we can use our communication and technical expertise only for the purposes of complementing existing capabilities. 8. We must be clear that development highlights a community's struggle to develop itself. Development is community participation in breaking away from all kinds of dependency, economically or otherwise to attain self reliance. The role of the expert is to increase capability of the focus group. 9. Education is divided between education for LIBERATION and education for DOMINATION. In the case of the latter, self proclaimed development experts like IMF are divorced from the realities of communities where thy they impose their aid programmes. The communities are always left poor ,disempowered and more prone to continued domination. 10. The role of tbe researcher is to provide social analysis, make people aware that when a certain area or community is underdeveloped it is not always because the community members are lazy. Due to historical colonization of Africa by Europe, the question of monocultures has been created such as in Senegal where people were forced to produce rubber while they were experiencing a problem of hunger. 11. There are national forces and international forces that impact lives. International forces like IMF and World Bank impose themselves on governments and enforce anti-development loan or aid conditions. Loans from IMF and World Bank must be rejected as they are not meant to support the livelihoods of our people especially the poorer classes. 12. Researchers have a duty to bring this information to communities so that they develop an understanding of the machinations of different forces with regards to development, how the world functions,and how that affects our situation. 13. Researchers must present data to communities, allow those communities to evaluate the data and give their input so that they don't become objects of research. That is the only effective way of mobilizing for the material and intellectual development of people. Anything else opposite to that will render the researcher an agent of imperialism. 14. The structural cause of hunger in Africa is land pressure which is a product of white colonizers taking all the productive arable land and pushing our people to the dry reserves. Colonizers did not come with civilization, even when you go to the most remote of areas where people have to access to modern sources of agriculture information, in their own rudimentary ways the people know about the differences in soil types and their suitability for certain kinds of crops. The view that Africans don't understand their land is an ugly lie. 15. The role of the researcher is to compliment existing knowledge and share information on organisations that control our lives such as IMF and World Bank. 16. This man is just plain dumb! He is EVIL!!!!! This is the way it starts. Manipulating the people against their own. We are not paying attention to details in Yoruba land. Believe it or not, the people known today as FULANIS AND IBOS are not indigenous to Nigeria, both of them. Over the last 300years they have not only made themselves become indigenous to where they are found, chiefly in the North-West and Anambra, they have forced themselves on the surrounding tribes of that region until their culture and ways have robbed off on them all. For example, the Hausas were the indigenous people of the North-West especially in towns like Sokoto, Gobir, Katsina, Kano, Zaria etc but today they are mightily suppressed and live according to the culture of the Fulanis by way of Islam. The towns of today's Enugu, Ebonyi and even Anambra used to be chiefly Igala lands. The towns of today's Abia used to be chiefly Ibibio and the towns of today's Imo used to be chiefly Ijaws but everything now wears the name IBO and the original indigenous people are forced to assume that identity. They are trapped in it! In Delta State, the people of Anioma in the general areas of Asaba, Ibusa and even Onitsha and Kwale and Agbor people were indigenous people who were never Ibos but had greater affinity to the Bini people of today's Edo State. But somehow, through many years of contact and integration with the non-indigenous Ibo people domiciled in Anambra, these people now have the Ibo identity forced on them and they try very hard but unsuccessfully to shake it off. In today's Rivers State, the land of Opobo was solely Ijaw and such lands as Ekpeye, Kalabari, Ahoada, Okrika, Portharcourt etc which are known to be Ikwerre evolved from a corruption of these same non-indigenous Ibo elements and the Ijaw people. It is a confusion of identity we have in the North-West, South-East and many parts of South-South. And this is where it worries me in Yoruba land because it is coming to us Ilorin today is already a mass of confused identity which arose from the constant corruption through inter-marriage between the Fulanis and the Yoruba people of those areas and powered by the Islam religion. Today, one can safely assert that NEARLY 100% of the Fulani population are Moslems even though it is more or less a political tool in their hands than anything to do with religion or Godliness. They are well bonded in the ideology of JIHADISM through Islam. We can also safely assert that NEARLY 100% of the Ibo population are Christians. They are well bonded in the ideology of ZIONISM which is well aided by Catholicism aside from their natural Igwebuike instincts. What do my people have? Almost Nothing today! ÌSÈSE should be our natural bonding of brotherhood but we have been manipulated out of it over a long period of brainwashing. Do you know that today it is far more likely that a Moslem Fulani from Kano will more easily get the ears of a Moslem Yoruba man than his own siblings may ever get especially if that Yoruba man is of asawana brands of Islam? It is a brotherhood. Do you know also that the Ibo Christian from Anambra is far more likely to easily get the attention of a Yoruba Born-again Christian than his own siblings may ever get if they happen to be Moslems or, worse still, into ÌSÈSE practices. It is a brotherhood. To add insult to injury, do you know that a typical Chukwudi who is a member of the RoF and in brotherhood fraternity with a Yoruba man in that society will by right get more favours from him than his Christian/Moslem siblings can ever get? This was clearly shown in the 1960s when Nnamdi Azikiwe in RoF brotherhood with our own Yoruba elites conspired to throw Obafemi Awolowo, their own brother into Jail. And the irony?

Me: I discuss in the book—it refers to the state where I know something, you know something, I know that you know it, you know that I know it, I know that you know that I know it, and so on ad infinitum. So it differs a bit from the conventional usage, which just refers to something that everyone knows. Here, everyone has to know that everyone knows. Times Radio Interviewer (Daniel Finkelstein Daniel Finkelstein): Can I use this with reference to the interview that I did yesterday with my brother? My brother’s a professor at City University; he’s president of the university, and there’s a campaign at the moment going on against one of their professors who was in the Israeli Defense Forces in the 1980s. We were having a discussion about how the university was standing up for the free speech of its staff, and I’d begun to wonder, as I went home reading your book on the tube, whether I’d made a big mistake—because the protest against this professor is really just a coordination exercise, isn’t it? And maybe I’d aided it by talking about it. Me: Oh yes—protests are coordination exercises. They’re designed to make private knowledge common knowledge. So, in a repressive regime, everyone may know that they despise the government, but because criticism of the government is punished, people might keep their opinions to themselves, with a result that they really don’t know what their fellow citizens think. Each one might think that they’re the only ones that are disgruntled, and so they can’t fear standing up to—they fear standing up to oppose the regime, because they can be picked off one at a time. If everyone were to protest at once, no government has the firepower to intimidate all its citizens at once. In a public protest, people can see other people there, and they know that the people there see other people there, and that can give them the strength and numbers to oppose the regime—sometimes by literally storming the palace, or sometimes just bringing the machinery of the state to a halt through work stoppages. But the crucial thing is that they are coordinated. They can only be coordinated if everyone knows that everyone knows that they hate the regime. We’re all much more aware of what other people like us, in particular like us, know, and we also know that other people know it, and so on, as you put it, and that makes people have more common knowledge. As the world continues to become increasingly more dependent on Artificial Intelligence for its information, organisation and convenience, a question arises about just how useful these supposedly intelligent programs are, and to whom. Large Language Models (LLMs) like ChatGPT and RoBERTa have been demonstrated to have racial biases towards Black people which in some cases have exceeded those of actual human racists. These biases have real economic, legal and political repercussions for people of African descent, and if no willingness is shown on the part of companies like OpenAI to fix these biases, then maybe it is time that Africa went the way of China, and built its own AI models to better serve and represent its own people.
